"Coroner Paul A. Isherwood of DuPage count today announced he had ordered an investigation into the cause of a fire early yesterday in which Ralph Gregory, 67, once a well to do retired grain broker, burned to death in his home at 315 Ann street, West Chicago....

'Mrs. Gregory was over-wrought and I was called to give her a hypo,' Coroner Isherwood, a West chicago physician, said. 'She calmed down and told me that she and her husband, 22 years her senior, had been quarrelling for a long time. She said that she had been visiting her sister in Oak Park and had returned at 2:30 a.m. Her husband remonstrated with her for the late hour of her arrival and in ensuing words he struck her and knocked her down. Her head struck an ash stand which left a mark on it, she told me.'

'She said she left and went next door, awakening the Seymours by rapping on the window. She also said her husband had been drinking and when she left he was lying on a downstairs davenport.'

Firemen and police attempted to rescue Gregory but were unable to do so until the flames abated. They found his body, badly charred, at the foot of the stairway leading to the second floor. The residence was destroyed for the fire had gained such headway it was impossible to bring it under control.

Gregory was born in West Chicago and had lived there all of his life. He followed his father as a telegrapher, working for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and then became an operator for a grain brokerage house. He was located for a time at Rochelle. He was formerly quite wealthy, it was said. His first wife died about six years ago when he remarried.

The body was taken to the Norris funeral home in West Chicago."
