Roger Clapp(110) was born on 6 Apr
1609 in Salcombe Regis, Devon, England. He died on 2 Feb 1690/91 in Boston,
MA. At the time of Roger Clapp's birth, his family was living on Coomb Wood
Farm in the parish of Salcombe Devon. The farmhouse, a large, two story
thratch roofed cottage is still standing today. It is only a few hundred
yards from the chalk cliffs that fall 200 feet into the English Channel.

account. Roger Clapp wrote his memoirs which is the only first hand
account of the sailing of the Mary & John in 1630 and the early Clapps in
New England. In his will he lists cousins Ester Bissell and Constant
Dewey. Roger served as selectman fourteen times in Dorchester between
1637 and 1665, until he was appointed "Captain of the Castle." He
continued in this office for 21 years with a salary of fifty pounds a
year, but resigned his post upon the dissolution of the First Charter in
1686, unwilling to lend his hand to the tyranny of Govenor Andros.
The surname Clapp originated in the name of a Danish nobleman, Osgod
Clapa, in the court of King Canut, 1007-1036, and thus is of great
antiquity.
The branches of the Clapp family in this country are descended from six
American ancestors; Edward and Captain Roger Clapp, sons of William
Clapp, and John, NIcholas, Thomas and Ambrose Calpp, sons of NIcholas of
Ven Ottery, Devonshire, England. The fathers of William and Nicholas were
brothers. All came to Dorchester, forming one of the most prominent and
influential families in that town. Most of the descendants in the
Northampton area are through Roger's son Preserved Clapp, who moved to
Northampton with other 2nd generation "Mary & John" passengers to become
a leading citizen as Captain of the militia, ruling elder of the church,
and deputy to the General Court. Parents: William Clapp and Johan Channon.
