sold for L20, 10 acres in Skipmunk, Springfield, to his brother Ariel Cooley,
b.1756. The material on his descendants is taken from a newspaper, headed
"Central Ohio Genealogy Notes and Queries,"Aug 16, 1936, by Dr. Frank W.
Gardner, and from a compilation of his descendants prepared by Rev Charles N.
Sinnett, Carthage, So. Dak. The Sinnett Compilation, date unknown, was based
upon Cooley Family Bible data. Both sources have been augmented by
correspondence with present dat descendants.
Asahel served in the Revolution, and was ever after known as Capt. Asahel
Cooley. He came with his family to Belpre, Ohio, about 1797. They settled
close to an Indian billage in Licking Co., Ohio, but the family suffered from
ague and fever, and determined to leave for a country of hills and springs.
They united with the Buckingham family, and removed to a spot near Carthage,
Athens Co., Ohio., where Asahel Cooley was one to the first white settlers.
They lived at a point about 16 miles north of where Athens now stands. The
Buckinghams settled about a mile away. Each farm embraced two hills, and
through the valley between the farms there ran a brook. The quite substantial
home which Asahel Cooley later built became known far and wide as "The Brick
House" and Cooleyville became a center of great hospitality.
Asahel, with the aid of his grown sons, cleared a large farm. He held may civic
offices, among which were Justice of the Peace and County Commissioner. Parents: Jabez Cooley and Abigail Hancock.
