"went from Roven to Holland. In the province of Guelderland he married
Elsje Hendricks in about 1640. Dutch government granted him land in Flatbush,
Long Island, and on Feb. 12, 1659 (some records say 1647) he came to this country
on ship "Faith" [probably erroneous, see below]. With him were his
wife and four children ages 9, 6, 5, and 1 1/2, and friend Peter Stuyvesant,
later governor of New Amsterdam. Stuyvesant, in return for small favor, granted
him a cow and later a grante of land on Hudson River extending from Gansevoort
St. up and including present Abingdon Square, which was the family burying ground.
This grant was located in present Greenwich Village, New York.
Lived for long time on Long Island. Settled as farmer on Manhattan near present
12th St. on North River, his farm extending to 21st St., from River to Warren
Rd. His dwelling was standing in 1776.
Will of Jellis Mandeveill of Greenwich, made in 8th year of reign of William
III, dated Sept. 15, 1696. To wife Elsie, entire estate until death or remarriage.
To eldest son Hendrick, farm in Queens County. To son David, my negro called
Peter together with L50. Rest of estate given to all children, Hendrick, David,
Tryntje now wife of Cornelius Jansen de Secur, Hittie now wife of John Mattolie.
Also, farm at Greenwich Village to be sold to highest bidder among children
and money divided equally. Executors wife Else and sons Hendrick and David.
