Sara Joris* De Rapelje
(109) was born on 9 Jun 1625 in Fort
Orange, New Netherland [now Albany, N.Y.]. She died in 1685 in Brooklyn, New
York. Sara was the first female child born in the colony of New Netherlands
in the year 1625. She and her husband lived in a house on Pearl St. in Brooklyn
in front of the fort and beside the lot on which her father's house stood. In
1640 her husband acquired a 400 acre plantation bordering on Wallabout Bay, Long
Island adjoining the land of Sara's father. They made their home there as early
as 1643. Sara was a woman of great talent and physical vigor, and was during
her life the acknowledged social leader of Brooklyn. She was twice married, first
to Hans, and later to Tunis Gysbert Bogaert [Bogart]. Between the two marriages
she had 14 children, becoming the maternal ancesstress of both the Bergen and
the Borart families of Long Island.
