________________________________________________________________

From the records of the Reformed Church at Machackemack (Deerpark), Orange County, New York:

"At a meeting of the Elders of the Church as Menissinck, April 7, 1748, the following persons were received as members 'upon satisfactory confession of faith and life': Andries Decker and Jacobus Bernhardin....

We have no data as to the time of Andries Decker's settlement in the Minisink country, but it was no doubt at the time of his marriage in 1730. In the tax list of the inhabitants of the Precinct of Minnissinck in 1739, for building the first jail in Goshen, his name appears as a property holder. He married Dievertjen Maul, of Kingston, the publication of the banns being April 12, 1730. They resided at Shippenock, N.J. some distance below Port Jervis, on the main road leading to the Brick House."

Marriages #196 "Jacob Decker, widower of Beeltje Cortregt and Sara Menteren widow of Jaems Pinnick, both resid in the Co. of Ulster, 6 Sept 1702"

From History of Ulster County, NY, page 157:

"The first settlement of the town [Shawangunk] was made by the Dutch along the Shawangunk Kill from 1680 to 1700. Among the early settlers were Jacobus Bruyn, Cornelius Schoonmaker, Abram Schutt, Zacharian Hoffman, Benjamin Smedes, Jacob Decker, John Terwilliger, and Johannes C. Decker.

bullet *Jan Broersen Decker(61) was born about 1630 in Husum Sonder Jylland, Denmark.(6042) He died WFT Est. 1658-1721.

He was married to Willemtie Jacobs WFT Est. 1644-1678. From "The Early History of Kingston & Ulster County", by Marc Fried:

"Under strong pressure from Stuyvesant, and in consideration of the precariousness of their position (living scattered and unprotected as they did on their separate farms), the settlers decided to remove their houses to a central location that was to be enclosed with palisades. This agreement was made formal by a contract or bond, dated May 31, 1658. The bond bears the signatures of [Jacob Jansen] Stoll, [Thomas] Chambers, [Cornelis Barentsen] Slecht, and the signatures or marks of the following six other men: Willem Jansen, Pieter Dircksen, Jan Jansen, Jan Broersen, Dirck Hendricksen Graaf, and Jan Lootman....

Stuyvesant selected a spot for the settlement and offered to buy this land from the Indians. The latter then gave up this parcel of land to him as a gift, 'to grease [his] feet,' as he had undertaken so long a journey to visit them. Work was begun on the stockade on June 3, with Stuyvesant's soldiers assisting the settlers. Carpenters from Fort Orange soon arrived to give further aid. The enclosure of palisades, fourteen feet high, was completed on June 20." This was the initial founding of the village which has grown into the city of Kingston, New York. Children were: *Jacob Janse Decker .

bullet *Katherine A. "Kate" Decker(61) was born in 1830 in Neversink, Sullivan Co, New York. She died in 1920 in Bridgewater, South Dakota. Parents: *William , Jr. Decker and *Anna Stevens.

She was married to *Peter Divine WFT Est. 1846-1875. Before moving to Illinois, Peter had a towboat on the Delaware & Hudson Canal, near Ellenville, New York, and a boy riding a mule on the towline. Three men cut the towline, so Peter called them SOB's, and they came after him. He knocked the first two down, and the third was afraid to come near. (It was usual to cut the towlines of somebody who was in the way.)

A map of the Town of Wawarsing, Ulster County from 1875 shows a "P. Devine" living next to the school house, 2 miles east of the Sullivan County line, and 2 miles north of Rondout Kill. Using today's landmarks, this would be on Yagerville Road (Rte. 46), about 1 1/2 miles north of Route 55A. This is probably where our Peter Divine lived just prior to moving to Illinois.

Peter Divine and family moved to Illinois in 1878 and settled near Burlington to be near Peter's brother Elezar (who lived in Sycamore Township, DeKalb County). In 1886, they relocated in Dakota Territory. After moving to Bridgewater, South Dakota, Peter drank too much alcohol, until his son-in-law forbade the barmen to sell him liquor.

David Divine (son of Peter and Kate) died of pneumonia when still a young man. Children were: Harriet "Aunt Hat" Divine , Cornelius "Case" Divine, David D. Divine, *William Divine, Nancy Divine, Elijah "Mack" Divine , Carrie "Aunt Cadd" Divine, Dell Divine.
