"Theunis Denyse m. Femmetje Jans Sales (Phoebe Sales) daughter of John Sales and Maria Roberts. He was born probably about 1615, and presumably in the vicinity of Bunninck (or Bennekom) in the Sticht of Uythuyzen, a village near Arnhem, the Netherlands. Search for his baptismal records has not been reported.

He emigrated to the New Netherlands as early as 1638, as from the foregoing place. The latter village is said to have then contained about 212 houses and 900 inhabitants.

Before 1639 Theunis Denyse appears to have possessed or occupied a plantation on Manhattan Island. A ground-brief to Thomas Sanderson of 13 July, 1643, was regranted to Theunis Nyssen, so-called, 5 December, 1643; the latter deeded this property to Cosyn Gerritsen 13 December, 1656. On 21 December of 1643 there is an acknowledgment of his on the Colonial records, of being indebted to Cornelis Dirckszen Hoogland for 400 guilders Carolus, for the purchase of cows. He bought a house and lot on the Great Highway opposite the gardens of the West India Company on Manhattan Island from Leendert Arendszen 1 December, 1646, and for 160 guilders; this he sold to Govert Loockermans 13 May, 1649. On 28 March, 1647 he obtained a patent for a lot north of the public wagon road, and east of the land of the Company on the said island, which he also sold to Govert Loockermans. He inherited also the land of his father-in-law John Sales who had received a grant in 1639; this patent was in the name of Theunis Nyssen 3 April, 1647. The land in question is bounded roughly by Charleton, MacDougal, Clark, Broome, Varick and Spring streets; west by Greenwich street. The house stood facing the present Van Dam street, south side, between Greenwich and Hudson streets.

In 1655 he bought a plantation at Flatbush, Long Island, of Evert Duyckinck, for 660 Carolus Guilders, where he probably resided in 1656; for on 13 December, 1656, Theunis Nyssen of Midwout conveyed to Cosyn Gerritszen a lot in New Amsterdam which had been patented to him 5 December, 1643. Nyssen of Denyse was evidently a real estate operator, and successful in this calling.

He was a resident of Brooklyn in 1658, and was in 1661 a magistrate of that town. He died shortly before August, 1663, and was probably buried in Brooklyn, New York.

Theunis Denyse of Nyssen married in the Reformed Dutch church in Manhattan, New Amsterdam, 11 February, 1640 to Femmetje, otherwise Phoebe, daughter of John Sales by his wife Maria Roberts. After the death of Theunis Denyse, she married Jan Corneliszen Buys." Children were: Jannetje Theunisze Denyse, Marytje Theunisze, Annetje Theunisze Denyse, Elsje Theunisze , *Femmetje Theunis Denyse, Dionys "Nys" Theuniszen, Jan Theuniszen .
