bullet *John , Sr. Divan(61) was born about 1615 in Cheshire Ferrers, England. He died on 4 Oct 1684 in Lynn, Massachusetts. Parents: *John , Jr. Divin.

He was married WFT Est. 1634-1664. From a letter from Albert Divine to Cousin Lois, dated February 14, 1992:

"M. John Divan of Lynn, MA in 1652".

"M. John Divan was illiterate, and spoke primarily French. His iconographic 'x' is found on Indian deeds for which he served as a witness, as far away as Maine in 1680. He died in 1684. His will and that of his son, John Jr., are in the Essex Institute records for Lynn, Massachusetts."

"John Divan, Sr. came from Cheshire Ferrers, England to Lynn (Mass.), perhaps by way of Annapolis, Nova Scotia, about 1640. The family was located in Cheshire Ferrers from 1587 till 1630-1636. Three brothers, Joseph, Williams, and John appear in the census records taken for this period (Doomsday Chronicles). They escaped there from Anjou, France about 1585-1587. In 1585 a pact was agreed on that members of the family who adopted the Huguenot faith would change the spelling of their name fo Di from De. Those remaining faithful to the Catholic religion would retain the spelling DeVine (Public Records for District of Anjou, France). The records from this point back in history are all in French and Latin... Our family roots in Anjou trace back to approximately 1100. The Irish Devines are all descended from the same family at Anjou. They participated in the Norman invasion of Ireland, taking land there as a result of King William's invasion and conquest. Faische O'daimhin (Devine) came from a little town not far from Anjou. The town was called Faiche. He settled in County Ulster, Ireland 1450-2."
