came in "Mary and John" from Plymouth, England. There were 140 passengers
who formed a church at Plymouth the day before sailing. During the
journey of 70 days the Word of God was preached and expounded every day.
When they landed each one offered a silent prayer of thanksigive and they
sand "Thou, Lord hast been our sure defense". They called the place
Dorchester, as several of them had come from there; arrived on May 30th.
A month later the rest of the fleet came to Salem and settled at Boston.,
17 ships came that year, bringing 1500 settlers. In 1635 sixty men, women
and children went with Rev. John Warham to Windosr, CT which they at
first called Dorchester. They endured great hardhsips in the journey of
14 days through the woods. In 1636 those who were left organized a new
church, which is now the First Church (Unitarian) of Boston, of which
Dorchester is a part. In 1695 another church was formed and in 1696 they
went to South Carolina and then settled at Midway, GA, a famouse church;
mother of many eminent men. The Drochester migration from England in the
"Mary and John" stands next in interest to the Plymouth migration in the
Mayflower then years earlier.
Thomas Ford had grant of land at Dorchester June 27 1636, and soon went
to Windsor, CT: to Northampton in 1659, probably with John Strong:
Freeman 1631; member of original Dorchester church. He was a man of good
estate, great energy, and a devoted friends of the regicides, Goffe and
Whalley; constable 1634; grand jury 1643, 1662, deputy 1637-40. He me.,
1643, (2) Ann, Wid. Thomas Scott.
Before Thomas moved to Windsor, he had the responsibility of looking
after the breeding of the cattle in Dorchester, which were very precious
to them. With George Hall, Humphrey Pinney and Thomas Lewis, he dealt
with the Sachem Tehano for the purchase of a piece of Land that would
become part of the town of Windsor, Ct. He had received 600 to 800 acres
in Windsor, based upon his original investment and size of his family
obligations. Without exception, the first 30 families with homes on Main
Street, Windsor, were old Dorchester people. He set up house near the
Pomeroy's Hosford's and Denslow's at the lower end of Main Street; all
neighbors from the Brit Valley, Dorset. The year 1660 saw considerable
exodus from the bottom end of the Palisado. Thomas Ford moved to
Northampton along with many others from Windsor and Dorchester.
