Gilson(109) was born on 18 Nov 1684
in South Attleboro, Mass.. He died on 4 Jul 1776 in South Attleboro, Mass..
Progenator of the "Attleboro Branch" of the Jillson family.
Our line descends from his brother Nathaniel and is called the "Cumberland Branch". Parents: James** Gilson and Mary*. He was married to Susannah about 1708 in prob. Attleboro, Mass.. Children were: Mary Jillson, Susannah Jillson, James Jillson, Daniel Jillson. James**
Gilson(109) was born about 1641 in
prob. from Town of Feering, Kent Co., England. He died about Oct 1712 in South
Attleboro, Mass.. " There is no record to be found of his marriage. The
name of his wife
was Mary, and they both died a short time previous to the division of the homestead between their two sons, Nov. 13, 1712. "Their tombstones are in the old burying ground in South Attleboro, [Mass.] and are common stones from the fields plainly inscribed, "J.G., 1712 and M.G., 1712. The spot where James first located and built his log house can still be pointed out. It was burnt by the Indians in the summer of 1675 or 1676, at the time they were scouring the country in small bands. He [James] was away at the time, (so tradition saith), and his wife was at a spring near the house with her child washing and the Indians did not discover her. If they had there would have been no occasion of writing our family Genealogy - Nathaniel being an infant at that time. She fortunately eluded their observation and escaped with her child to the garrison in Rehoboth, a distance of six miles, where her husband found her. James Gilson's proportion of the tax to defray the expense of King Philip's War was four pounds eighteen shillings and two pence. His name also appears among those who drew lots for the meadows in the north part of the town (Attleboro), in 1668." [Above from the Gillson-Jillson Genealogy, by David Jillson, 1876]. A letter from Mr. Richard J. King, P.O. Box 2278, 149 West Spring St., Vineyard Haven, Mass. 02568, phone (508) 693-4915, and dated Nov. 3, 1994 says in part, " I'm afraid it has been a long time since I located the graves of James and Mary Jillson [Gilson], but it is my recollection that it was not terribly difficult to find. I believe the cemetary is located on Route 123, about a mile or so south of Interstate 95 in South Attleboro on the left hand side. It is a beautiful old cemetary with a high section [knoll] in the center toward the road. James and Mary are burried roughly in the center of this high spot. However, all that remains in the way of markers is a plain field stone about 8 or 10" in diameter, with the letters " I.G." and a foot stone marked "1712". Mary's markers are gone. There are many other Jillson's [Gilson's] burried in this place, scattered throughout. It is a fascinating site for anyone interested in our ancestors." I personally traveled to this cemetary in August of 1995. The name of the site is the Newell Burying Ground [phone (508) 761-9650] , and it is located on Rte. 123 in South Attleboro, Mass. on the south side of the road at the west corner of the intersection of Read Rd., which comes into Rte. 123 from the south. There is one main driveway leading to two gates into the cemetary. Take the east gate [the one with actual gates that can be closed, the other one does not have them]. Just inside the gate is a vault with "ERECTED 1828" over the door. Straight ahead to the east of the vault is a paved drive heading south into the cemetary. Take 19 paces down this drive and you will be at a point where a smaller, less used dirt drive comes in from your left. Turn and go up this drive towards the east 25 paces. Turn left facing north at 90 degrees to the drive you are on, and take 8 paces. You should be standing just about on James Gilson's grave. It will be marked by a plain field stone 8" to 10" high, 12" wide at the base, 3" thick at it's top and 5" thick at it's base. It faces east and as described in the genealogy is inscribed with his initials {using the old English style of J that resembles an I] and the year 1712. Contrary to the letter from Richard J. King, I did find Mary Gilson's grave. It is 5 more paces in a straight line from the drive, and 2 paces to the left [west]. Her stone is also the same type of field stone, but is smaller. It faces west and is 3" thick, 5" high, and 10" wide at the base. It has a rounded top where as James' is flat on top but drops about 2" from one corner to the other. Her initials, MG and 1712 are inscribed on it. The G almost looks like a C. I am willing to bet that the inscriptions on both of these stones were carved [more like scratched] there by one or both of their sons, James Jr., or Nathaniel. I have probably made the finding of these graves sound much more difficult than it really is. You can look right down onto Read Rd. from their grave sites, and both are on top of a long flat topped knoll. They appeared to me in looking around that they were the only graves marked by true, light gray, field stones. There were many made from a dark gray slate, but no others were just plain rocks. There are no other markers within 25' to 30' of James' grave. Mary's is more like in a row, with noboby on her north side and the grave of an Alexander Maxcy on her south side. I could find no sign of the "Old Field". In talking with a man and his wife who have lived in South Attleboro, near the cemetary, for 66 years, they have never heard of it nor do they recall hearing of it let alone remember seeing the "state historical sign" Richard J. King spoke of in his letter. Neither could I find "the spring nearby" mentioned in the genealogy. I am sure that it is the present site of the reservoir in South Attleboro. "Down the road beyond the cemetary on the right hand side is an historical marker for the " Old Field", which was part of the original Gilson homestead, and was used as a training field for the local militiamen in the Revolutionary War." [from Mr. King's letter] From what I can read into Mr. Studley's History of Attleboro [we own a copy] James Gilson came northward from old Rehoboth Township and settled in South Attleboro [called "the city" back then]. He owned several parcels of land, but the one he and Mary lived on, where their house was burned by Indians, was on the east side of what is today Rte. 123 all the way from the intersection of Read Rd. to the present day reservoir, also on the east side of Rte. 123. Read Rd. is adjacent to the Newell Cem. where James and Mary are buried. As I said above, the reservoir is no doubt the site of the spring that was "near the house" where Mary and little Nathaniel happened to be when the Indians showed up and burned the house. The "Old Field" is further south on Rte. 123 towards Rte. 1, and on the opposite side of the road. Attleboro Library: Phone [508] 222-0157. Need to call for help in locating the "Old Field" in So. Attleboro. They may have phone no. for the hist. soc. in Capron Park. Expenses for my solo August, 1995 trip to Attleboro and Cumberland area: tolls $18.80; food $14.14; gas $42.50 [averaged 20.13 mpg]; lodging one night at Super 8 in No. Attleboro $51.74; total $127.18. Trip took about 6 hrs. one way. Left at 6 AM on a Friday, Mass. Pike traffic heavy. Went on same trip in 1996 and left on a Wednesday. Traffic lighter, but heavier on return trip on Friday. He was married to Mary* about 1673. Children were: Nathaniel* Gilson, Mary Gilson, James Gilson. Joseph

James** Gilson and Mary*. Nathaniel*
Gilson(109) was born on 24 Jan 1674/75
in South Attleboro, Mass.. He died on 9 May 1751 in Cumberland, R.I.. "Of
his marriage and birth of children there is no record extant. All
that is known of his wife is her name, Elizabeth, and that they were married between the year 1700 and 1705. He lived for several years after his marriage on a part of the homestead in [South]Attleboro, [Mass.] that has ever since been called the Old Field. The spot where his house stood can still be pointed out, but a part of the land he improved has since returned to its original state of nature. His two sons were probably born in [South] Attleboro, before he removed to Dedham Gore, (afterwards Bellingham, [Mass.]). Nathaniel had lived in Bellingham but a short time previous to his father's death, in 1712. He was living there at the time the homestead in [South] Attleboro was divided, (Nov. 13, 1712). Nathaniel sold his share of his father's estate in [South]Attleboro to Benjamin Day, the following month..." Jillson Gen. This Bellingham is today Cumberland, R.I. due to state boundary changes. Several more pages of the Jillson Genealogy are devoted to various deed descriptions and wills of Nathaniel and Elizabeth. Progenator of the Cumberland Branch of the Jillson family [our branch]. Please see "More" for his son Nathaniel Jr. for a complete description of where both Nathaniel Sr., his wife, and Nathaniel Jr. and his wife are buried. Parents: James** Gilson and Mary*. He was married to Elizabeth* about 1700. Children were: Nathaniel* Jillson, Uriah Jillson, Martha Jillson, Pricilla Jillson, Elizabeth Jillson.
