bullet *Abraham Halstead(61) died before 10 Jun 1613 in Northowram, Halifax parish, Yorkshire, England. He was born about 1705 in perhaps Lancashire, England.

He was married to *Susan Whitley on 5 Sep 1596 in Halifax Parish, Yorkshire, England. From "Colonial Families of Long Island, NY, and Connecticut", by Herbert Furman Seversmith, 1939:

Abraham Halstead "was born about 1570, perhaps in Lancashire. The baptismal record has not been found. He was a resident of Northowram in Halifax parish, Yorkshire, where he was a clother. His life was destined to be short, as he had died before 10 June, 1613. His will, dated 5 September, 1612, was proved 10 June, 1613, and is filed in the York "Registry", vol. 32, f. 402; in it he calls himself of Northowram.

Abraham Halstead married in the parish church at Halifax, 5 September 1596 to Susan Whitley, who survived him....

The foregoing is taken from the original parish register entries of Halifax, as searched for on behalf of Mr. Wardwell and the writer. Reference is already made to the wil of Abraham Halstead. An abstract follows:

The rest of all my goods chattels credits and debts I give to my children Abraham, Joseph, Jerimie and Jonas my sonnes and Grace and Susan my daughters equally.

I commit the education and tuition and government of Abraham Halsteade my son and his porcin to John Whitely of Burnfield in Bollinge of Joseph Halsteade my second sonne to John Boyes of Halifax of Jeremie Halsteade my third sonne to Joseph Wood of Northowram of Jonas my fourth and youngest sonne to Susan my wife of Grace Halsteade my elder daughter to Michael Whitley of Ovenden and of Susan my youngest daughter to Joseph Whitley of Ovenden. executors John Whiteley of Bowling and Joseph Wood of Northowram.

Overseers John Whiteley the elder and Richard Wood
Witnesses John Gledhill, John Kyghley.

The foregoing will is also indexed in the Yorkshire Archaeological Society Record Series, vol. XXVIII, p. 56.

At this writing an examination is being made of the burial registers of Halifax parish to determine the death dates (approximately) of members of this family. An absence of any burial entry for a Jonas Halstead would appear to confirm the connection that is proposed here, and which we believe to be correct [that this is the same Jonas who came to America]." Children were: Grace Halstead, Abraham , Jr. Halstead, Susan Halstead, Joseph Halstead, Jeremy Halstead, *Jonas Halstead.

bullet *Jonas Halstead(61) was born before 23 Feb 1610/11 in probably Northowram, Halifax parish, Yorkshire. He died about 1683 in probably Hempstead, New York. Parents: *Abraham Halstead and *Susan Whitley.

He was married WFT Est. 1630-1661. From "Colonial Families of Long Island, NY, and Connecticut", by Herbert Furman Seversmith, Vol. II & III, 1939:

Jonas Halstead "was born about 1611, and probably at Northowram, Halifax parish, Yorkshire.

He is identified as the one of that name who was recorded as baptised in the parish church at Halifax 23 February, 1611.

Jonas Halstead is said to have been an early settler of Stratford, Connecticut, and was there before December, 1655. From Stratford he removed to Hempstead, New York, where he was witness to a deed in December, 1655.

He is recorded in the 1658 apportionment of 'Gattes' and had fifteen. An undated list, probably of the same time, recorded that he was given thirty-five acres of meadow as his allotment of that kind of land. He appears to have been a speculator in land, for the records of the towns of Hempstead, Oyster Bay, and Jamaica indicate that his residence was in each at various and almost contemporary times....

In Jamaica [now part of Queens, New York City] on 2 May, 1673 he sold land to John Skidmore which he had bought of Mr. Robert Coe. He was evidently domiciled there 13 April, 1675, for he was made overseer for the ensuing year in that place. He and his son Timothy were executors to the estate of his son-in-law Captain Thomas Carle, who had married Jonas' daughter, Sarah Halstead. On 1 May, 1676 Jonas Halstead made an agreement with James Bate for the management of the Carle farm at Hempstead. On 30 March, 1677 he sold other property which he had bought of Mr. Robert Coe, to Jonathan Mills. This last property at Jamaica included the home in which Halstead had been living, and upon conclusion of the sale he returned undoubtedly to Hempstead, to be near his children. He was probably then in his late sixties.

He recorded his earmark for livestock at Hempstead 19 January, 1680-1, and was overseer at Hempstead for the year beginning 2 April, 1681.

It is our opinion that he died in the late part of 1683. No will or administration is of record. He was buried probably at Hempstead, New York." Children were: Timothy Halstead, *Sarah Halstead, Joseph Halstead, Martha Halstead.

bullet *Sarah Halstead(61) was born about 1638. She died after 2 Mar 1681/82 in Hempstead, New York. Parents: *Jonas Halstead.

She was married to *Thomas Carle in 1656. From "A Carl Family History, The Story of an Old Long Island Family", by Skip Carl:

Whether Captain Thomas Carle, our earliest traceable ancestor in America, was a ship's captain or a captain in the militia is impossible to say. Marion E. Carll makes the claim that 'the early Carlls were all military men.' (A Century of Brentwood, Dyson.) Whatever he was, Thomas Carle must have been by nature one of those roaming and restless spirits, of that same stuff of which explorers and pioneers are made of.

We first meet the Captain on February 27, 1656. On that date Richard Ogden, one of the original patentees of the Town of Hempstead, Long Island, sold 'unto Thomas Carle inhabytant off hempstead in the new Netherlands' all that he possessed in that town. The purchase included houses and 'planting Land upon the Greate plaines with the south Meddows and geates and fence upon the Neck With: 4 :getes ffor oxen in the east oxpaster.' (Records of the Towns of North and South Hempstead.) It must have been an enormous parcel of land, probably encompassing a good part of the Hempstead Plains and part of Great Neck.

That same year, in the month of March, Thomas Carle along with thirteen others 'who are of Heempstead' for the third time petitioned the Dutch Governor of the New Netherlands, Peter Stuyvesant, for permission to settle the town we now call Jamaica (known then as Conorasset). This, they hoped, would be 'a place where they may hope whith Gods blessing upon theyr Labours more comfortably to subsist.' (The document.) They had purchased the place from the Indians previously for 'two guns, a coat, and a certain quantity of powder and lead.' (A History of Long Island from Its Earliest Settlement to the Present Time, Ross.) But they said that they were unwilling 'to remove out of the jurisdiction' until they had the Governor's express permission. (The document.)

They were allowed the land at Jamaica according to a document 'Done at Fort Amsterdam March 21st 1656' and signed by "P. Stuyvesant." However, Captain Thomas chose never to remove there. (Oldest Presbyterian Church in America.)

Thomas married Sarah Halstead 1656-8. She was born in or about the year 1638 in England and was the daughter of Jonas Halstead. Jonas was born circa 1610, probably in the West Riding of Yorkshire in northern England. He emigrated to Stratford, Connecticut, and thence to Long Island. Jonas' parents were Abraham Halstead (married September 5, 1596) and Susan Whitley (baptized February 1, 1572, a daughter of John whitley and Anne Hartley). (The Halstead Family.)

Sarah and the Captain raised a family of six. Their children were Thomas (a Quaker), Elizabeth, Margaret, John, Joseph, and Timothy.

In an inventory of 1659 we learn that the Carles owned 6 gates, 6 milk cows, and 39 acres of allotted meadow, with 30 being the 'rate or proportion of taxes for public charges' they owed for 1658. (Annals of Hempstead, Onderdonk.) By 1659 Thomas owned three calves; by 1661, five. (Ross.) ...

Thomas died about the year 1675. We have no idea how old he was. We do know that he died intestate. On March 25, 1676/7, upon the petition of the 'widow Carle', Letters of Administration were granted her. Her father, Jonas, and her brother, Timothy Halstead, were made overseers of the estate. (Town Records.)

James Beate, a son-in-law of the Captain's (husband of Elizabeth Carle), covenanted with Jonas Halstead 'to cary on and maneage the husbantree work belonging to the Esteat of Thomas Karl' for a time span of three years. He was 'to provide foder for the Catell [and sheep]' and firewood for the house, and to 'kepe the fence in Repaire.' 'For his Pains,' James would have 'a third Part of what Corn an pumpkin that is prodused of the land.' He would also have as his own 'a third part of the incres of the Cattel,' a 'third part of the incres of the Shepe,' a 'third of the Calfes and the lames,' and 'a third part of the incres of the swine.' Jonas Halstead would provide monies, six oxen, a horse, a cart, and a plow so that the work could be carried on. Thomas' sons, Thomas, John, Joseph, and Timothy, were to join in the work with their brother-in-law James Beate. (Town Records.)

In December 1680, Sarah Halstead Carle made over the right and title of certain property to the same James Beate. In a document dated 1682, Sarah ratified the gift of land given by her deceased husband to daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law James. (Town Records.)

The last mention of Sarah Carle, the 'widow Carle,' was in the evaluation of real estate for 1683. She then had in her possession '2 heads, 66 acres, 6 oxen, 19 cows, 3 hogs, 8 sheep,' and those two very well marked horses! (Annals of Hempstead, Onderdonk.)

bullet *James Hamblen(61) was born in 1606 in England (probably London). He died in 1690 in Barnstable, Massachusetts.

He was married to *Anne (Hamblen) about 1628 in England. From "The Doane, Emmons, Lindner, Roney and Stout Families", by Robert Harold Lindner, page 97:

"James Hamblen and Anna came to New England and settled in Barnstable before or during the spring of 1639. Although five children had been born to them in England, it appears that only two, James and Hannah, lived to make the trip to the new world.

Their houselot, consisting of eight acres, was located on beautiful Coggin's Pond. It was bounded on the east by the commons which became the graveyard. James Hamblen also owned various other plots of land, some eight acres in all, in the vicinity of Barnstable.

From "Genealogical Notes on Barnstable Families", by C.F. Swift, Volume I, 1888, pages 522-524:

"As nearly all the first settlers of Barnstable came from London and the County of Kent, it is probably that James Hamblen, the ancestor, came from that city, as stated by Mr. David Hamblen in the New England Historic and Genealogical Journal. Of his early history, little is known. He appears to have been an early member of Mr. Lothrop's church, though the date is not found on the record. His son Bartholemew was baptized April 24, 1642, but the baptism of his older children, James and Hannah, do not appear on the record. It is probably that they were born in England, and that neither they nor their mother came over so early as the father. This was a common occurrence in early times. The father came over, and when he had provided a home sent for his family.

He was one of the earliest settlers, and was in Barnstable in the spring of 1639. His houselot, containing eight acres, was at Coggin's Pond, and was one of those that I presume were laid out under the authority of Mr. Collicut. It was bounded northerly by the lot of Gov. Hinckley, easterly by the Commons, (now the ancient graveyard) southerly by the Commons, and westerly by the highway, which at that time after crossing the hill on the west turned to the north on the borders of the pond to Gov. Hinckley's old house, which stood near the pond, and thence turned easterly, joining the present road at the head of Calve's Pasture Lane. In 1686 the present road was laid out through Hamblen's lot, and leaving a triangular shaped portion of it on the north of the road. Afterwards, in 1693, the location of the road having been changed, the Hamblens were allowed to enclose that part of the old road situate between their land and the pond, and adjoining to Gov. Hinckley's The westerly portion of the road which was discontinued, opposite the south end of the pond, was reserved as a public watering-place, and is so occupied to this day.

His other lands were six shares and six acres of upland in the Calves Pasture, twenty acres of upland, and the meadow on the north, bounded easterly by the land of Henry Bourne, and westerly by the land of Dea. John Cooper. His great lot of fifty acres was bounded south-westerly by the great Indian Pond, southerly by the lot of thomas Lothrop, and northerly by the commons. It was the most northerly of the Indian Pond lots, and his son John built a house thereon. The Hamblens were among the first settlers in that part of the town, and that region of country is now known as Hamblen's Plain.

In 1686 James Hamblen, Senior's, house is described as standing on his twenty acre lot, on the north side of the highway, between the houses of Mr. Russell (known in modern times as Brick John Hinckley's) and Dea. John Cooper's, now owned by Mr. William Hinckley and others. In the year 1653 this land is called on the records Mr. Groom's land, but in the following year, 1654, Goodman Hamblen's.

James Hamblen, Sen'r, died in 1690. In his will dated Jan. 23, 1683-4, he names his wife Anne and all his children. To James he gave L10, to Bartholemew, L5, and to his daughter Hannah, 'according to ye desire of my mother,' L5. All the rest of his estate he gave to his wife during her natural life, and after her death to be divided equally among his children. He had a large real estate. His personal estate was apprised at L19,17.3.

Goodman Hamblen was not much in public life. He was an honest man, a good neighbor and a sincere Christian. He was industrious and prudent in his habits, and brought up his children to walk in his footsteps. His descendants have, with few exceptions, inherited the good qualities of their ancestor. The Hon. Hannibal Hamlin, Vice President of the United States (under Lincoln), is the only one among them who has been eminent in public life.... In 1642 James 'Hamlen' was admitted a freeman of the Colony, and in 1643 was constable of the town of Barnstable. The usual spelling is Hamblin, but the descendants of James are not uniform. Eleazer, the great-grandfather of Vice President Hamlin, dropped the 'b' as a useless letter, and his descendants have continued to do so.
Children were: James , Jr. Hamblen, Sara Hamblen, Mary Hamblen, James , Jr. Hamblen, Hannah Hamblen, Bartholomew Hamblen, *John Hamblen, Sarah Hamblen, Eleazar Hamblen, Israel Hamblen.

bullet *John Hamblen(61) was born on 26 Jun 1644 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. He died before 8 Mar 1717/18 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. Parents: *James Hamblen and *Anne (Hamblen).

He was married to *Sarah Bearse in Aug 1667. From "The Doane, Emmons, Lindner, Roney, and Stout Families", by Robert Harold Lindner, 1986, page 80:

"John Hamblen and his family resided at Hamblen's Plain, West Barnstable, Mass. He was a farmer. His wife, Sara Bearse, was an early member of the church, but John did not join until late in life.

The following information concerning John Hamblen came from "Barnstable Families", Vol. I:

"John Hamblen, Sr., died in 1718, aged 73 years. In his will dated Jan. 3, 1714, proved March 8, 1717-18, he gives to his son, John, one-half of his tenement at Indian Pond, one-half of his dwelling house and barn and one-half of his lands, and to son Benjamin, the other half, and to his son, Ebenezer, his tenement at Cooper's Pond, and the lands adjacent. It appears that he had a large landed estate and that he owned three houses and tenements. That at the Indian Pond he did not occupy himself. The dwelling house which he occupied was farther north on the 'Plain'. His personal estate was appraised at L168,0,8. He names his nine daughters and three sons. Since his daughter Thankful had died in 1683, it seems that he had another younger than Benjamin not named in the record." Children were: *Melatiah Hamblen , Prescilla Hamblen, Sarah Hamblen, Martha Hamblen, Experience Hamblen, Hannah Hamblen, Esther Hamblen, Thankful Hamblen, John , Jr. Hamblen, Ebenezer Hamblen, Abigail Hamblen, Benjamin Hamblen.

She was married to *Ichabod Higgins WFT Est. 1681-1710. From "Richard Higgins and His Descendants", by Mrs. Katharine Chapin Higgins, 1918:

"Ichabod Higgins resided at Eastham all his life and was a farmer. He was also a considerable land owner and some of the deeds of land he bought are still in existence. The site of his first homestead, bought prior to his marriage, is probably indicated by the following:

'I Daniel Cole of Eastham for L7,14,0 to me paid by Ichabod Higgins have granted to said Ichabod a parcel of upland in Eastham at a place called pochet on the westerly side next the Town Cove, adjoining to my land where I the sd Daniel do now dwell, seven acres more or less to the westward of my now dwelling house. Dated March 17, 1689-90. Recorded May 22, 1706 in Bk. 5, fol. 17, Barnstable County Deeds.'

'Zachariah Sias Indian of Eastham conveys to Ichabod Higgins parcel of marsh ground and upland lying at Machquesset in the constable writ of Eastham, bounded west by thomas Mayo, on the other sides by land of Indians. Dated Oct. 15, 1695. Acknowledged Feb. 11, 1695-6. Recorded May 22, 1706 in bk. 5, fol. 77, Barnstable County Deeds.'....

The last deed shows that Ichabod Higgins was a wheelwright as well as a farmer. This occupation carried with it blacksmith's work also, and we find that Ichabod's son Thomas was a blacksmith. Ichabod was a freeman of the Colony and in February, 1707-8 was a townsman of Eastham. On Marcy 17, 1700-1, it is recorded that he was chosen grand juryman. In May, 1725, Mr. Ichabod Higgins's house was one of the places appointed by the town for sheep shearing. ...

John Higgins was appointed administrator on the estate of Ichabod Higgins on July 5, 1728. In the estate there was bond (probably promissory note) payable to Isaac Hinckley of Barnstable. On March 27, 1736, said Hinckley brought a suit for this bond and recovers Judgement against John Higgins mariner and Thomas Higgins blacksmith, both of Eastham. (File No. 44330, Superior Court of Judicature.) This would indicate that Ichabod Higgins had a son Thomas whose birth is not on record, probably born about 1703. This is made a certainty by an old deed which will be given in its place under Thomas Higgins...." Children were: John Higgins, *Nathaniel Higgins, Thankful Higgins, Lydia Higgins, Ebenezer Higgins, Thomas Higgins.
