bullet *Gerrit Janse Hardenbergh(61) was born before 17 Feb 1638/39 in Maarden, near Utrecht, Holland. (10744) He died after 1700. Parents: *Jan Jacobsz Van Hardenberg.

He was married to *Jaepie "Jacoba" Schepmoes about 1666. From "The History of Kingston, New York", by Marius Schoonmaker, 1888:

"One branch of the Hardenbergh family descended from Gerrit Hardenbergh, a resident of Albany, whose wife was Jaepje Schepmoes. Their son, Johannes Hardenbergh, moved to Kingston, where he married Catharine, daughter of Jacob Rutsen and Maria Hansen. He was one of the original patentees of the Great or Hardenbergh Patent. He left several children; one was Johannes and another Leonard. The descendants of this branch of the family are very numerous.

There was another Johannes Hardenbergh, who came from Holland about 1660 and settled in Ulster County. The writer cannot give any particulars in regard to his descendants."

From "Genealogical and Family History of Southern New York and the Hudson River Valley", Vol III, 1913, p1039:

"The name Hardenbergh in its Dutch form is Hardenberg, the terminative 'h' having been added to the word by the descendants of the pioneer settler in America of that name. The annals of the ancestry of the Hardenberg family reach back into the twelfth century, stretching in an unbroken line more than seven hundred years to 1174, when the old Castle Hardenberg in the Harz Mountains, Germany, was the abode of Dietrick von Hardenberg, the supposed founder of the family. In that year the castle was erected, and was owned by the consent of Mainz. It was guarded by men at arms, and dietrick von Hardenberg was a trusted warden. In the fourteenth century, on account of a heavy debt owed to them by the convent, the castle passed into the possession of the Hardenbergs, who since its erection had been wardens. This castle was the residence of Karl August, Prince of Hardenberg, who died at Genoa, November 26, 1822. He was one of the most illustrious statesmen of Prussia. He filled various positions of dignity and power. He was entrusted with the will of Frederick the Great, to be delivered to Frederick William II of Prussia.... Frederick von Hardenberg (1772-1801) was an eminent German poet and philosopher.

The Westphalian branch of the Hardenberg family at an early day became planted in Holland, leaving there many of their name, also the town of 'Hardenberg' on the river Vechte. In 1644 Arnoldus Van Hardenberg, a merchant from Amsterdam, Holland, came to America. He was born in Holland and in 1649 was one of the council of the director-general of the New Netherlands, but he returned to Holland ten years later.

(I) Gerrit Janse Hardenbergh first appears on record in 1667, at Albany, New York, when he was the purchaser of goods at an auction. He was the son of Jan Van Hardenberg, who arrived at New Amsterdam (now New York) before 1644, and who died in New Amsterdam about 1659, leaving issue still in their minority though unnamed. Ten of twelve years after his death a young man, Gerrit Janse Hardenbergh, married a young woman of New Amsterdam, born in 1647, daughter of Jan Jansen Schepmoes, a near neighbor. He purchased a lot on Chapel street and Maiden Lane in Albany, in 1669, and three years later another lot on Maiden Lane between North Pearl and Chapel streets. Four years later he purchased a third lot on State street between North Pearl and Chapel streets. He had children baptized in Albany in 1683, but three years later he pur and his wife appear as residents of New York City in a list of members of the Reformed Church of New York made by Rev. Henricus Selyns. They were then represented as dwelling in a house on Pearl street between State and Whitehall streets. He was the owner and commander of a sloop, known as the 'Royal Albany', which plied the Hudson river between New York and Albany. He was commissioned by Governor Jacob Leisler, May 19, 1690, to war against the French in Canada, with the title of captain. He was living in 1696 which is the last ddate found referring to him. He seems to have been a quiet, law-abiding, God-fearing citizen, taking little part in public affairs and having no business other than the care and management of his sloop. He married after coming to America, probably about 1666, Jaepie or Jobje Schepmoes, and in 1678 they made a joint will mentioning children but not by name. They had children: Elizabeth, Johannes, Sara, Mary, Neeltje, Rachel, Cornelius, Barendence. The mother was baptized at New Amsterdam, January 6, 1647. Her baptismal name written Jobjie on the church register , was perpetuated among her descendants in the form of Jacoba. She was the daughter of Jan Jansen Schepmoes and Sara Pietersen, who came from Holland to Beaverwyck (now Albany), as early as 1638."

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller, 1958:

"Gerrit Jansz van Hardenbergh was a native of Maarsen in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands. This follows from his will made in 1678 in which he makes this statement. (The will is found in Early Rec. Albany, 1918, Not. Papers, vol 3, 466). The statement that he came with his father from Maarden is not correct. Maarden suggests Naarden a town also in the vicinity, and there is no evidence that his father ever came to this country. Maarsen is a small town near the city of Utrecht. In 1632 it had 474 inhabitants and fortunately the church registers of the period have been preserved. The records of the Dutch Ref. Church of Maarsen disclosed the fact that on Feb. 17, 1639, Gerrit was baptised as son of Jan Jacobsz (van) Hardenberch, name of mother not given. Gerrit Jansz Hardenbergh appeared for the first time in the records of Albany in 1663 and signed his name Gerrit van Herttenberc. (Early Rec Alb. 3:238) In documents quoted in Early Rec of Albany 3:287,431 he signed Gerrit Jansz Herttenbergh....

In 1690 Gerrit was the owner and captain of the sloop 'The Royal Albany,' and received on July 3, 1690 a commission to act against the French. A few months later, on Sept. 22, 1690, he was appointed a member of a committee to take inventory and made appraisal of the cargoes of certain vessels at New York.

He and his wife are mentioned in Kingston in 1700 as sponsors at the baptism of a child of their son Johannes, and Jaepie Hardenbergh is in 1714 a sponsor at the baptism of a grandchild. On December 24, 1678 Gerrit Hardenbergh of Albany and wife Jaepie Schepmoes made a joint will, written in Dutch, at 4 P.M., in which their children are mentioned, but not by name.

At a public auction of the estate of the late Rutger Jansen van Schoenderwoert he bought on Apr. 8, 1667 'three old shirts and a valance'. He had many real estate transactions.... Most of his children at their marriage were said to be living in New York." Children were: Elizabeth Hardenbergh, *Major Johannes Hardenbergh, Sara Hardenbergh, Mary Hardenbergh, Neeltje Hardenbergh, Rachel Hardenbergh, Cornelia Hardenbergh, Barendina Hardenbergh .

bullet *Jacob Hardenbergh(61) was born before 17 Mar 1716/17 in Kingston, New York.(10745) He died on 27 Feb 1773 in Wawarsing, New York. (10746) Parents: *Major Johannes Hardenbergh and *Catherine Rutsen.

He was married to *Petronella Bruyn on 7 Oct 1737 in Kingston, New York. (3474) From the records of the Wawarsing Dutch Reformed Church:

Jacob Hardenbergh is shown on the subscription list for the building of the church in 1742 as pledging 6 shillings. Later records show that he worked 2 1/8 days on the building. An agreement was made between the Wawarsing church and the Rochester Dutch Reformed Church (the parent church) on October 16, 1745 that "the line of separation between the two Congregations should run from southeast to northwest, at the house of Jacob Hardenbergh, who will belong to Wawarsing."

Petronella Bruyn, wife of Jacob Hardenbergh, was baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church in Kingston. There are baptismal records on both June 5, 1715 and October 19, 1718, so we assume that the first Petronella died before the age of 3, and the second one survived. She was probably named after her grandmother Petronella Slecht. She joined the Wawarsing church on August 19, 1751. The last mention of her was on August 12, 1780 when she was a sponsor at the baptism of her granddaughter Petronella Devenport.

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller:

"From her father by his will 1744-6-30 (Book of Deeds, Liber 8 EE Kingston) Peternella was given 667 acres on the southeast side of the Paltz river 'by mee purchased' also a share in the 8000 acres, and 60 pounds, and ten pounds from the wheat crop, and a share of the household goods. Pieternella Bruyn, wife of Jacob Hardenbergh, joined the Reformed Dutch Church at Wawarsing Aug. 19, 1751, by confession of faith, No. 35.

Jacob Hardenbergh lived at Wawarsing in the Rochester part. His house divided the congregations of Wawarsing and Rochester. In 1751 he and others bought 300 acres on the Peterskill. He was listed as a voter in 1740. In 1741, Jan 5, he was on the subscription list for the church for six shillings. He worked one day; to 2 1/2 day's work, and rode one day; to 1 3/4 days.

Jacob Hardenbergh was a trooper in Foot Company of the militia of the Corporation of Kingston under Captains Person and DeWitt.

His death came suddenly about nine in the evening, as he went outside he fell dead by the door.

It is not positively known by the author whether Hanna and Gratin were children of Jacob and Pieternella. Gratin had a sister Maria.

bullet *Major Johannes Hardenbergh(61) was born about 1670 in Albany, New York.(10747) He died after 17 Apr 1745 in Ulster County, New York. (10748) Parents: *Gerrit Janse Hardenbergh and *Jaepie "Jacoba" Schepmoes.

He was married to Hillegonde Myers on 10 Jul 1696. Children were: Katherine Hardenbergh.

He was married to *Catherine Rutsen on 5 Dec 1699 in Kingston, New York.(10749) From "Genealogical and Family History of Southern New York and the Hudson River Valley", 1913, Vol III, page 1040:

"Johannes, eldest son of Gerrit Janse and Jaepie (Schepmoes) Hardenbergh, was born about 1670, at Albany, and appears on record, January 2, 1689, as the purchaser of a lot from the trustees of the town 'on the corner of the street opposite the house and barn of Corneis Masten' in the village of Kingston, Ulster county, New York. He was commissioned July 30, 1690, as high sheriff of that county by Governor Leisler, and in the political controversies during the administration of that governor he was staunchly loyal to him. In 1709 he was again appointed high sheriff of Ulster county by Governor Lovelace, and was a trustee of the town of Kingston in 1707-09-12. In 1728 he was major of the Ulster county militia under Colonel Jacob Rutsen, and was later colonel of the same regiment, but was almost universally designated Major Johannes Hardenbergh. In the general assembly of the state, July 15, 1737, he was a delegate from Ulster county and seems to have held the respect and confidence of his contemporaries for more than half a century. He was intimately associated with public affairs and his renown as a public official is eclipsed by his fame as the principal proprietor of the Great or Hardenbergh Patent. This is said to have covered about two million acres of land in the counties of Greene, Ulster, Orange, Sullivan and Delaware, and was purchased from the Indians in 1706, being confirmed by royal grant from Queen Anne, April 23, 1708, to Johannes Hardenbergh and several associates. A general survey of the tract was begun in 1749 and created such dissatisfaction among the Indians that Hardenbergh entered into negotiations with them by which they conveyed to him by written deed the portion of land in dispute for the sum of one hundred and forty-nine pounds and nineteen shillings, the equivalence of seven hundred and fifty-three dollars. This grant continued, however, to create controversy and bitterness. One of the townships in Ulster county commemorates the Hardenbergh proprietorship by bearing his name.

He married (first) July 10, 1696, Hillegonde Myers, a young woman from New York, probably the daughter of Andries and Vrountje (Van Vorst) Myers, as they are on records as sponsors at the baptism of the only child of this marriage, a daughter Katherine, baptized October 4, 1697, and died previous to October, 1708. The mother died previous to September 1698, and he married (second) December 5, 1699, by license granted September 12, 1698, Catherine Rutsen. Children: Gerardus and Jacobus, twins, the second died young; Marrytie, Jacoba, Johannes, Catherine, Rutse, Abraham."
________________________________________________________________

From "History of New Paltz", by Ralph LeFevre:

"The Hardenbergh family has been one of the most respected and influential in Ulster County, its members occupying positions of trust and responsibility in church and state, in peace and war. Of late years there have been comparatively few of the name in Ulster County.

Dr. Corwin in his last edition of 'The Manuel of the Reformed Church' says:

Sir Johannes (Hardenberg) was knighted by Queen Anne at the recommendation of the Duke of Marlborough for gallantry at the decisive battle of Blenheim. With the order of Knighthood he also received the patent which bears his name and which comprised a considerable portion of what now constitutes the counties of Ulster, Delaware and Sullivan in the state of New York.

In signing his name, Johannes Hardenbergh sometimes simply signed 'Hardenberg' as was the custom with those in England who held titles.

The Hardenbergh family is of German origin and the ruins of the Hardenbergh castle are still pointed out near Nordheim, in Germany. Gerrit Jans Hardenbergh, the progenitor of the family in Ulster county, came to America with his father from Maarden, near Utrecht, in the Netherlands.... Their son Johannes became an owner of real estate in the village of Kingston in 1689, was commissioned high sheriff of Ulster county by Gov. Leisler in 1690, and again by Gov. Lovelace in 1709. He was commissioned as major in the Ulster county regiment in 1728, and was afterwards a colonel in the same regiment. He was one of the patentees in the great or Hardenbergh Patent, by which an immense tract, estimated at 2,000,000 acres in the present counties of Ulster, Orange, Greene, Delaware and Sullivan was granted by Queen Ann in 1708. There was considerable dissatisfaction among the Indians for a long term of years at the granting of so large a tract, but they became satisfied on the payment of an additional sum.

By his wife, Catharine Rutzen, he had a large family of sons and daughters. Two of the sons married New Paltz women and settled within the bounds of the New Paltz congregation, although but one of them, Abraham, lived in the New Paltz precinct, his home being at Guilford. The brother Johannes lived at what is now Rosendale village. Other members of the family located elsewhere...."

From "The Hardenbergh Family", by Myrtle Hardenbergh Miller, 1958:

"Will of Johannes Hardenbergh of Kingston, Ulster County, Gent., being sick. Dated 17 April 1745. On file at office of the Surrogate, New York. (Liber 16,339 Ulster Probate Records, in part): 'My executors are to sell all real estate, the proceeds to be put out at interest for the use of my wife Catharina; after her decease ... all my estate to my children, Gerardus, Johanes, Abraham, Leonard, Jacob, Maritje (wife of Charles Brodhead), Jacobs (widow of Edward Whitaker, Jr., Esq. deceased) ... I make my wife and sons Johanes and Abraham, and son-in-law Charles Brodhead, executors. Witnesses, Anthony Sleeght, Adam Person, Jan Eltinge. Proved before John Crooks, Esq., Oct. 15, 1748." (p 27)

"The Great or Hardenbergh Patent consisted of approximately two million acres of land situated in Ulster, Greene, Orange, Sullivan and Delaware Counties, New York. On the 22d of March 1707, Johannes Hardenbergh, then a merchant in the Esopus (Kingston), purchased from the Nanisinos an immense tract of land, paying for it the sum of sixty pounds current money of New York, the deed being signed by the above named Indian and witnessed. In April 1708 this transaction was confirmed by royal grant under Queen Anne. Leonard Lewis, Philip Rokeby, William Nottingham, Benjamin Fanieul, Peter Falconier, and Robert Lurting were joint owners with Johannes Hardenbergh. Later an eight interest was released to Augustine Graham. This tract was bounded 'on the East by the watershed between the Hudson and the Delaware rivers; on the Northeast by a line drawn from the lakes in Pine Orchard to the head of the Delaware River; on the Northwest by Lake Utsayantha; on the West by the Delaware river; on the South by a line leaving the Delaware river about twelve miles from north of Port Jervis and reaching the watershed by courses 45 degrees East and North 53 degrees E."
