Joseph Tolman Harlow⁽¹¹⁰⁾ was born on 9 Dec 1817 in Cummington, MA. He died on 19 Oct 1879 in Plainfield, MA. Joseph Tolman Harlow was nearly five years younger than his brother
Charles but died som six years earlier. His life was a useful one in many
ways and spent in the west part of Cummington MA, at times on a farm near
East Windsor MA. He was a millwright by trade and also a cabinet maker,
for he was skilled in the use of tools and could turn his hand in many
ways. He installed the first turbine waterwheel to be set up in that
section, at Allenville in the town of Windsor MA and for one Capt. Allen.
For a period of twelve years he was a proprietor of the hotel in West
Cummington MA called the Deer Hill House and was so engaged at the time
of the Civil War. His first wife was Elizabeth Pratt Stetson, born Feb 17
1823, in Plainfield MA, daughter of Jetson Stetson. They had five
children. She died of "erysipelas in the head" in 1863. In 1867 Joseph
married Electa Haskins. They had one child. (See Cummington Harlows, pg

In 1853 Joseph bought the family farm in East Windsor from his brothers.
He sold it in 1857 and bought the Deer HIll House in West Cummington,
believed to have been built in 1839. He was proprietor of that hotel
until 1868, when he sold it and bought a farm in Plainfield. He died on
Oct 19 1879, and is buried in West Cummington Cemetery.
West Cummington: Joseph T. Harlow, who died in Plainfield the 19th Oct.,
was born and lived in Cummington until about ten years ago, and for
several years owned and kept the hotel in this village. Beneath a
sometimes rough exterior he possessed a kind and genial disposition, had
a good word for everyone, was fair and honorable in business relations,
and was a good neighbor and citizen, reminding us of the description of
the Roman soldier. "His was a noble spirit, rough, generous, brave and
kind.". His death was caused by a cancer in the stomach, and he was laid
up from his work but about four weeks. His funeral was largely attended

November 19 according to "The Cummington Harlows" (1928) the family moved
to Cummington MA. It is also stated there that the family moved from
Natick MA. Mehitable died in childbirth June 25 1807. On Jan 18 1808,
Matthew married a widow, Persis (Johnson) Parker. She died of consumption
March 9 1831. She is buried in Bryant Cemetery on Trow Road in
Cummington. Matthew died Jan 18 1847 of "gravel" and is also buried in
Bryant Cemetery.

Ward Asa Harlow⁽¹¹⁰⁾ was born on 14 Oct 1850 in Cummington, MA. He died on 7 Jun 1933 in Cummington, MA. Ward Asa Harlow, farmer of Cummington was prominent in church, town and

Gave away a farm - Lost $10,000 and Never Went to Ask for it. James
Thomas died suddenly on Wednesday at his old ancestral home, the one
which he so strangely deeded to Ward Harlow several years ago. The cause
of his death was neuralgia of the heart. He had been ailing since Friday,
but had not thought medical attendance necessary until Wednesday morning.
He was 68 years of age. It was at his house that Alvin Willcutt died so
suddenly several weeks ago. Mr. Thomas was a peculiar man, a bachelor,
and well-to-do. Several years since he went to W.A. Harlow, then living
the Swift River, and told him he had been watching his actions, and
concluded he was just the man he wanted to give his farm to, and after
some few interviews Mr. Thomas deeded his farm to Mr. Harlow, and since
then the two have lived on the place, which Mr. Harlow has vastly
improved. It is one of the best farms in town, of large extent, has one
of the two or three pieces of original timber, where one can see pines
and hemlocks five feet through. It has large fields as free from stone as
the Northampton meadows, all dug out by Mr. Thomas and put into walls, of
which there are some eight feet high and five feed thick. In this gift to
Mr. Harlow were all the stock, tools and furniture, nothing reserved. At
the time of the Northampton Bank Roberry, Mr. Thomas lost $10,000 in
government bonds which he never recovered, and he never went ot the bank
to inquire for them. He was a great reader, and never forgot a word he
read, displaying a remarkable memory for dates and names of men and
places. Mr. Thomas took as much pleasure in seeing Mr. Harlow improve the
farm as though it was still his own, and this most peculiar transaction
turned out to be a good one, the two living in perfect peace.
Ward Asa Harlow served his town in many ways with undimished vigor and
has been especially active in the Grange. As a district deputy he
visited Granges all over the state and gone to State conventions. He was
a farmer and resided for many years at Greenridge Farm high up above the

Ward Henry Harlow⁽¹¹⁰⁾ was born on 14 Dec 1906. He died on 15 Mar 1988 in Westfield, MA. Ward worked for Strathmore Paper Co. of West Springfield MA for nearly 39
years, then worked as a Quality Control Engineer at the Dennison National
Blank Book Co. in Holyoke MA until his retirement in 1977. He and
Elizabeth celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1981. He died in 1988 and is buried in the West Cummington Cemetery. They lived in Westfield, MA. Parents: Ward Alvin Harlow and Abbie Louise Morey.
