William Harlow⁽¹¹⁰⁾ was born on 2 Jun 1657 in Plymouth, MA. He died on 28 Jan 1710/11 in Plymouth, MA. See "The Cummington Harlows".
William Harlow appeared on the list of residents of Lynn MA dated
1629-30. In 1630 ten men from Lynn, called Saugus, obtained leave to
settle land in Sandwich, including William Harlow. In that year Thomas
Hampton, of Sandwich, not included among the first settlers, died without
family or kindred, leaving a will in which William Harlow was both an
attest and legatee, which was permitted under the law of the colony. In
1639 he was proposed for admission as a freemen and took the oath of
fidelity. In 1640 Sandwich assigned him four acres. He moved to Plymouth
afterwards and built several houses in that town. One of them, erected in
1676, still stands on a lot granted him by the town. It is framed from
the timber of the PIlgrim Fort on Burial Hill in Plymouth.
William was sergeant of the South Company and in charge of the fort for
many years. After King Philip's War (1675-1676) he bought the fort from
the town and used the timbers in building his house. When some repairs
were made to the house in 1882, a ponderous iron hinge to the fort gate
was revealed attached to the timber, and placed among the relics of the
Fathers in Pilgrim Hall.
William Harlow did military duty in the Indian wars under Major William
Bradford. He served on the jury many years; was assessor, deputy to the
General Court two years and selectman fifteen years. At the time of his
death he was chairman of the selectboard. He was also active in church
affairs. William Harlow married (first) at Plymouth, 1640, Rebecca
Bartlett, daughter of Robert and Mary (Warren) Bartlett, grandaughter of
Richard Warren, who came on the Mayflower. William Harlow, Jr. married
Lydia Cushman, daughter of Thomas Cushman and grandaughter of Robert
Cushman, a wool carder of Canterbury, who accompanied the Pilgrims to
Leyden, Holland. Parents: Sergeant William Harlow and Rebecca Bartlett.
