month of the new year has gone. We have had some very cold days and
nights but today was so fine I put on my overshoes and went down to the
garden. There was a big drift in the middle but the sun was very bright
and warm and I could see qite a number of people skiing on the hill just
above Harold's place. Ethel gave Jessies children skis for Xmas and they
are all learning. Well, at last Henry is all through with the roads so we
will have less responsibility now. Just the farm will be our job and
thats enough. We can do must or little as we like. Francis will probably
do some on the roads but will help on the farm too so we will get along
fine. Henry said he hated to think he was too old to do it any more but
we surely are getting along. I'll soon be 63 and Henry 69. The only
comfort is that we are all growing old together and we must do it
cheerfully I think. I don't feel shut in anymore with the roads plowed
every time it snows. Time have changed, don't you think? Don Ameche is
on. Don't you enjoy your new radio? Last Friday Jessie asked me to go to
Pittsfield with her so we went to the dentists and the stores. Had a
great time. The dentist said my gums weren't ready yet so I guess it wll
be a year before I get my teeth. Come and see us, both of you. With love,

A letter from Grace to Alma (Higgins) Cady dated Feb 9 1939 says "We were
married at Henry's Uncles home at Malta, IL but I visited at Uncle
Nathan's and saw all the children. Elizabeth's husband was a barber. She
was the only one married at that time. The rest were all at home on a big
farm of 116 acres and when Uncle Nathan died he left each of the children
80 acres of land and the home farm was left to his wife. I thought Nathan
was married but knew that Charlie, Alice and Effie were not. The other
boys are Milo and Roy. I think that more than half of Uncle Prentices
children are dead and Carrie was one of the first to doe. She was married
and had one daughter, Leona. Her husband was a dentist. The two oldest
boys went to Colorado and one was still living there the last I knew and
the other one was dead. Addie Reynolds had a brother named William too.
When their Mother died they were small so Addie lived with us for a hwile
and William lived with Uncle Charles Bromly. When they were grown up they
went back to Ill. I have found Amy's last letter and she wrote that
Allen has the old Higgins Bible so he is the one to write to. He lives
at 850 S. English, Springfield IL. There are only five in that family
living. Their father, Barney Prentice Higgins, was the oldest of the
family and the last to die. I remember him very well. They lived on a
large farm in Elmwood when I was there but after his death the farm was
sold and the sons are scattered far and wide. It seems strange to me that

"Dear Alma, I have not been very successful in finding the information
you asked me to look up as all the generation has passed on but Dr. Fiske
and I would not get any dates on the family history as his memory has
failed him entirely, and he is all there is left to really know about
it. However Gertrude Fiske and Elsie Currier sent me the info they have.
I don't know anything about my father's half brothers Henry and George
Higgins, and the half sisters Jennie and Mary. I know a little in
regaard to them. Jennie married W.S. Gam?. They had no family. Mary m.
Elmore Wade. They had three children, George Wade, Bert Wade and Leila
Wade. I know they lived in New Haven CT but that is all. Charlie Higgins
married Lottie Sibley. They had one son Ralph Higgins, but for dates,
etc, I don't know. My mother's name was Lena Owens and the baby that only
lived a few days name was Mary Gertrude Higgins, not Lena May. Died Sept
10 , 1888. Parents: Barney Higgins and Polly Prentice.
