Edmund Hobart arrived in Charleston, Mass., from England in 1633, along with his wife and his children -- Joshua, Rebecca, Sara, and perhaps Thomas. He was named a freeman in 1634 and constable the next year.

Edmund, along with his son Thomas, went to Bare Cove (later Hingman) as some of the first settlers of that area in 1635. He drew house lots on Town Street on 18 Sept. 1635, his lot being the seventeenth, while lots eighteen and nineteen were granted to two of his sons.

Edmund was elected deputy to the General Court in 1639, 1640, and 1642.

"Edward Bangs was a shipwright, who, if the information be true, was summoned to the 'Ann' to prepare her for the voyage to America. Edward, a stranger (not a member of the church), decided to sail with the 'Ann' and arrived in New England in 1623.

There has always been a question as to the number of times that Edward was married and the names of his wives. At least one historian surmises that Edward was married to a Rebecca _____ in England and that his wife and two children accompanied him on the 'Ann', but that all three died shortly after arriving in New England. In the land division in Plymouth Plantation in 1623, Edward drew four shares, indicating a wife and two children. Sometime around 1627, Edward married Lydia, dau. of Robert Hicks. Lydia evidently died about 1633 and he was married a third time to Rebecca Hobart around 1635....

While at Plymouth, Edward's homesite was located on Winter Street in that part of town called Chiltonville. Edward was an active and highly respected citizen. In 1626 he was a 'purchaser' in Plymouth.

As a shipwright, he superintended the building of the first vessel built at Plymouth, a bark of forty to fifty tons. He was also a land appraiser, a surveyor of highways (1647 and 1650), a storekeeper (he could draw and sell liquor), and keeper of the public house (tavern).

Edward was among those sent out from Plymouth in 1640 to survey and look over the site of Eastham with the idea of moving the colony there, and he was one of the first inhabitants of that town.

Mr. George D. Bangs, a descendant of Edward, said the following concerning him:

'Edward was held in high esteem as shown by the records referring to him as 'Mr. Bangs' the 'Mister' in those days being applied to yeomen [landowners] of the higher class -- men of considerable wealth, intelligence, and local influence.

In the records of his community service, he is shown to have been associated with leading men in Plymouth: Governors William Bradford, Edward Winslow, and Thomas Prence, and also with Capt. Miles Standish and others prominent in government affairs.

He was modest, not a seeker of glory, but an intelligent, upright, faithful, conscientious, public spirited citizen of the times, revered and trusted by his fellow men.

That our ancestor was tender and king, and held worthy to care for the welfare of the unfortunate, may be inferred from the fact that in 1658 he was designated with Nicholas Snow and Richard Higgins for 'oversight and disposal of poor children.'

On 26 Aug, 1916, a tablet was placed in the town hall in Eastham. It reads as follows:

'To the memory of Edward Bangs -- one of the original purchasers and first settlers of Nausett in 1644. As incorporator of the town renamed Eastham in 1651. The first treasurer of the town, holding that office continuously from 1644 to 1665. Chosen deputy to the general court and elected selectman in 1665 for two years. (Pratt's History of Eastham).

He came to Plymouth in the Anne in 1623 and was the founder of the American branch of the Bangs family. He died at Estham in 1677 or 1678, aged 86 years.

His life work is known by the record of his forty years of public service in the Plymouth Colony.

In appreciation of his character, his faithfulness to every trush and his high conception of duty as a member of the church and a citizen of the colony, this memorial is erected by the Edward Bangs Descendants 1916.'
