A good tailor-made suit cost from twenty to twenty-five dollars. It was said that the men of Hampshire were the best dressed men in Kane County. "Francis", from Ipswich in 1634, aged 23. Removed to Northamton; was

deacon at Northampton May 13 1663; Representative to the General Court in

David Burt. Sarah, m. John King. Ruth m. Joseph Baker, who was killed
by Indians: M. 2nd, Thomas Lyman. Rachel M. Thomas Strong. From the
Hampshire Gazatte: 1`866: "William Holton heads the list (of Deacons in
Early times of The Northampton Church); one of the Springfield
petitioners in 1658 and one of the first comers the next year to
Northampton. The first marriage in the infant settlement was in his
family, Nov 18 1655, between David Burt and Mary Holton. In the same
family, the next year the second marriage occurred, the parties being
John King and Sarah Holton. From this second marriage sprung a numberous
race of Kings. The town appointed William Holton in 1657 to solicit the
General Court respecting sundry particulars, especially to "to desire
advice what course to take about the prevent of excess in liquors in
coming to our town, and of cider." In 1663 at a time of unusual seeking
to God for guidance, after choosing a ruling elder, the church chose
William Holton deacon. Being the first of officiate in this capacity, he
was also the first deacon of the church called away by death 28 years
after his appointment in 1691. The Holton name continued in Northampton
at least two generations.
