bullet John Hoskins(110) was born before 1610 in Beaminster, Dorset, England. He died on 3 May 1648 in Windsor, CT. "Over the years several unsubstantiated claims and statements about the
colonial settler John Hoskins have been printed and reprinted. In an
effort to
distinguish fact from fiction, the colonial records have been searched
for all

such
references for he lived only 18 years after his settlement in America and
he
was not very active in local affairs." (From The "Hoskins Genealogist,

to son Thomas Hoskins, and to daughter, wife of David Wilton, and to
grand-daughter Mary Marshall. 1662: Mch 6 "Old Widow Hoskins died".
16632: June 1, Inventory of the estate of Ann Hoskins, deceased 113-4-0.
Origin: Col Banks suggested Beaminster, Dorset, as the place from which
John Hoskins came. While there were Hoskins there, no marriage records
identifiable as his has been found, and no baptismal records of his
children has been found. Several persons have searched English probate
and parish records; none have found any records which helps to trace John
Hoskins in England. The majority of the Dorchester settlers were from
Dorset, Devon, and Somerset. Emigration: It has been concluded that he,
and possibly his family, were among the passengers of the ship Mary &
John, which sailed Mch 20 1630. Considering that he was at Dorchester in
1630 and that the majority of the founders came on the Mary & John, it
seems quite probable that he was among the passengers. Family: Both
John's and his widow's
will clearly prove that they had a son Thomas. Ann's will proves that she
had a daughter Katherine, wife of David Wioton. It has been assumed that
this Katherine was a Hoskins. While John is mentioned as "senior" at
Dorchester in 1634, this does not prove that he had a son John, but
merely that a younger man of the same name was in town that year. There
is no clear evidence that he had a son John and no further record of this
younger John Hoskins. It has been suggested that John's wife was a
daughter of George and Jane Filer, and sister of Walter Filer, neighbor
of John Hoskins. (All of this copied.)
History and Genealogy of Pomeroy family, Vol 3: Shows a connection
between Eltweed Pomeroy and the Hoskins family in Beaminster area, and
because they settled Dorchester and later Windsor together, we can
probably assume that Hoskins came from Beaminster family.
