bullet Nathaniel* Jillson(109) was born about 1708 in Rehoboth [now So. Attleboro], Mass.. He died on 17 Apr 1782 in Cumberland [part now in Woonsocket], R.I.. "Nathaniel owned large tracts of land in Bellingham [Mass.], and
Cumberland [R.I.] -common lands- that he bought of the proprietors at
different times. Seven acres of land laid out to Nathaniel Jillson, Jr.
in 1729 on the rights of Jonathan Draper. Also, in 1730, five acres which
he bought of the proprietors; and Feb. 21, 1734/35, two acres and one
hundred and twenty rods of land of Daniel Jencks, (in the third division
in Bellingham), laid out on the east side of the great river (Blackstone)
west from his house. I also find in Suffolk County Land Records a deed of
fifty two acres and three quarters of land that Nathaniel, Jr. bought of
David Wilkinson, in the township of Bellingham, lying near the great
river, dated Jan. 15, 1732/33. Nathaniel was a prominent man in town
affairs. At the first town meeting in Cumberland, Feb. 10, 1746, he was
chosen one of the overseers of the poor. And in town meeting held June 1,
1747, he was chosen one of the Town Council, which position he held for
many years. He gave his son Nathaniel a deed of gift of a part of the
homestead, dated April 27, 1774. On said land was a dwelling house built
in 1770. The house is in good condition at the present writing [1876],
and is occupied by one of the grand daughters of his son Nathaniel."

Several more pages of the Jillson Genealogy are devoted to the wills of
Nathaniel and his second wife, Sarah Arnold.

Cumberland was larger than it is today, so in most cases what is refered
to as Cumberland in the genealogy for births, deaths, and marriages
really occured in the southern part of present day Woonsocket. This is
particularly true of Nathaniels homestead. Said to be in Cumberland, by
todays map it is in Woonsocket.

In Aug. of 1996 I found the cemetary mentioned in the genealogy and called there "the enclosure near the house". Today it is marked by a Rhode Island state historical sign which says "Jillson Cemetary". It is located on Lambert Ave., west off of Mendon Rd., about a mile inside the Woonsocket town limits. It is on the left [south] side of Lambert Ave., about 200 feet from the street. Access is made to it by walking through a wide, mowed, easement to it between two houses. It was raining the day I stopped there, but I did see the stones for Nathan Jillson and his family. Several graves are marked by slabs of slate like stone with no writing visable. The graves of Nathaniel Jillson, Sr. and Jr., and their wives are no doubt marked with this type of stone. The cemetary is about 50' by 100' in size. It is well taken care of, by neighbors I am told. Don't be confused by the Lambert Ave. in Cumberland on Mendon Rd. a few miles south of here.

As to the original Nathaniel Jillson, Jr. house which stood nearby this cemetary, and where both Nathaniel, Jr., and his father Nathaniel, Sr., and their wives lived and died; it was dismantled in the late 1980's or early 1990's and moved to Tiverton Four Corners, R.I. where it was reassembled. In 1996 it is owned by the Hensel family and is where they live on their alpaca farm called Henseforth Farm. To find it travel south from Tiverton on Rte. 77 to Tiverton Four Corners. At the traffic light there [the only one on the road in 1996] turn left [east] on East Hill Rd. [Rte. 179]. Go about .9 mile and the house will be on the left [north]. It has a sign out front reading "Alpacas of Henseforth Farm". There are bushes growing roadside [wild ones] obstructing the view a little, but not bad. A little gravel drive winds through alpaca corrals for a couple hundred feet and ends near the house. It stands with one end towards the road, its front facing west. It looks real nice; typical colonial styling. I pulled in and took several pictures. Unfortunately nobody was home. Would like to have talked to them. When the house stood in Woonsocket it had an addition to the rear and a barn stood nearby. These were left behind and destroyed. Parents: Nathaniel* Gilson and Elizabeth*.
