flourished in England about the year 1128, having
come into vast estates through his service to his King, and was grantee of hte Forest of Mara and Mandren. When Cromwell came to power the Kingsleys, along with many others, were deprived of their estates. The first ancestor to come to America was John Kingsley, who came from Hampshire, England, in 1632 and settled first in Taunton, then in Dorchester MA in 1635. He was one of the seven signers of the first church covenant, August 23 1636. John moved to Rehoboth after 1648 and became one of the town officers. During the Indian wars he and his family suffered severely, and one of his letters to the authorities, asking relief, has been carefully preserved as an important historical document of the times. His son, Enos Kingsley, was probably born at Rehoboth about 1650 and it is he who located at Northampton and married Sarah, daughter of Edmund Haynes, of Springfield. See Chapman Manuscripts for the children of Samuel and Naomi. Samuel,
the third of the name, was one of the earliest settlers in Westhampton. He settled in the south part of that town in 1768. He was married about that time to Naomi Wright. Late in life he moved to Easthampton to reside with his daughter. Mr and Mrs Kingsley both died in Easthampton. A more full acount of Samuel Kingsley, 3rd, and his wife can be found in S. Wrights history of the south part of Westhampton. Parents: Samuel Kingsley and Jemima Parsons. He was married to Naomi Wright on 5 Jan 1769. Children were: Naomi Kingsley.
Samuel Kingsley(110) was born on
24 Nov 1710 in Northampton, Ma. He died on 19 Aug 1781 in Southampton, MA.
Samuel Kingsley Jr. of Northampton was born in 1710 and married Jemima
Parsons in 1739. They settled in Southampton about 1752 on a farm in the west part of town, which S. Wright designated as No 4 in his History of The Homes in the West Part of Southampton". S. Wright states that Samuel and Jemima had also a daughter Jemima who married Azariah Lyman in 1774 and settled in the south part of Westhampton, near his brothers, where she spent her life and died Jan 6, 1839, aged 91 years. The following is also quoted from Mr. S. Wright: "Mr. Kinglsey was the third settler in the west part of Southampton of whom there is any record, but little is now known concerning him. (S. Wright.) It is said however that he was one of the most earnest supporters of Rev. Jonathan Edwards, D.D. during the great theological controversy which terminated in Mr. Edwards' dismissal from the pastorate of the old church in Northampton in 1750. Mr. Kingsleys grief at this result is supposed to have been the cause of his leaving Northampton. The above statement is well authenticated and is in no doubt true. Mr. Kingsley died Aug 18 1781, aged 70 years. The place of his death is uncertain. Rev. Soloman Clark of Plainfield says in his antiquities of Northampton that Mr. Kingsley died on the old homestead, and was buried under an apple tree not far from his house. His death also appears on the Northampton records of deaths before mentioned, which would seem to indicate that he died in that town. His gravestone, however, is now to be seen near the center of Southampton. His wife and several of his family are also buried there. Mrs. Kingsley survived her husband several years. "Some things which occured in Mr. Kingsley's time seem strange to the reader on the present day. (1890's). The date of Mr. Kingsley's settlement on No. 4 has been given, but it is not until 1774 that we find any record on the town books to prove that a road existed to his house; the records then state that a committee was chosen to award Samuel Kingsley's damage for a road through his land. There is no record whatever of when this road was laid or whether it proved to be permanent. In 1778 Noah Pomeroy who lived on No. 3 wanted a road, and a road was accordingly established March 27, 1779. The surveyors' statement, stripped of professional language, may be condensed as follows: "Beginning at chestnut straddle marked W.W.O. by the highway leading from the meeting house to the house of Deacon Elias Lyman, and running to a heap of stones 2 rods from Samuel Kingsley's house and thence (very crookedly) to a chestnut tree in the north line in Southampton." This road was to be 2 rods wide through Samuel Kingsley's improved land and three rods wide the rest of the way. Mr. Kingsley was to be allowed to keep a shut road through his farm during the towns pleasure, he keeping up gates or bars. Mr. Kingsley is the same man mentioned in my history of Southampton Vol 1, page 132." Parents: Samuel Kingsley and Mary Clary. He was married to Jemima Parsons on 27 Dec 1739 in Northampton, Ma. Children were: Lucy Kingsley, Hannah Kingsley, Enos Kingsley, Samuel Kingsley, Joseph Kingsley, Daniel Kingsley, Naomi Kingsley.
