bullet Augustine (Augustus) COMER(446) (447) was born about 1757 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. (448) He was born on the Rapidan River, just East of the Shenandoah Valley. He Enlisted in the Continental Army in 1776 in Virginia. (449) It was Easter Monday the day He enlisted. He served four and one half years under Captain Langley, Twelfth Virginia Regiment, Continental Establishment, Colonel Neville and General Scott. He fought in the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, Stoney Point, and Charleston, South Caroline. While the Army was encamped at Assanpink Creek at Trenton, New Jersey, Augustine was placed on guard duty with orders to challenge any strange person three times, and then to fire unless answered. An Officer, who thought he would have some fun with Augustine and frighten him, got down to the edge of the creek and threw firebrands. Augustine was alarmed but obeyed his orders and fired, wounding the Officer. He was placed under arrest but was exonerated by General Washington, who complimented him for his faithfulness.

His heirs filed claim in 1847 for additional benefits and they were eventually paid. The claims were supported by statements from Jacob Comer, John Comer, John Peters, Sally Peters, Elizabeth C. Miller, Barbara Comer, Frederick Comer, Michael Comer, and Catherine C. Ball of Logan County.

Early records in Virginia show that there were two Comer families living there. One family lived in the County of Halifax, and the other in the County of Augusta. Augusta County now called Page county is located in the Shenandoah Valley.

There is a deed transferring 271 acres of land from Peter Ruffner to Xstopher Comber (Christopher Comer), it was recorded in Augusta on the 14th of April 1746. This land is located near Hawksbill Creek at Stoneyman. The land near Stoneyman is slightly rolling, and is excellent land for framing. This area also gives and excellent view of the Blue Ridge Mountains only a few miles away.

The family that lived in the Shenandoah Valley is the one I (Francis H. Bruley) am most interested in, and is the one shown here. Most of the information that I have on this family came from a book called "Kith and Kin of Boone County, West Virginia" Volume 1 Published by the Boone County Genealogical Society Madison , West Virginia.
