Christopher was a school teacher, Confederate War Veteran and owned several slaves. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on August 17, 1862 at Tazewell County, Virginia. Christopher was thought to be a deserter by the Confederate Army but later was found to be captured by Union soldiers. During this time, the Union soldiers had taken his wife's horses. The enemy made him walk which was difficult since he was crippled. When the soldiers pressured him to speed up, he told them why not let him ride his wife's horses which they did promptly.

The Lakes owned a large piece of property, a canyon with rich mineral rights. This canyon was called "Lake Branch" which netted the family and heirs some income for a time.
Christopher Lake was a crippled schoolteacher who used a cane. When the children misbehaved he pulled them to him in the crook of his cane, placed them over his knee and spanked them with his cane.
Although crippled, he served in the Revolutionary War as a drummer boy. As the story goes, in one battle the soldiers marched forward, but one soldier lagged behind, so Christopher shoved his drum into the soldier's hand, took the soldier's rifle, and took a place in the front line. The commander, looking down the line of marching men, said "I know Christopher Lake is there, because I can see him limping along".

There is an old will dated 2 Mar 1799 at Hoosick Cnty., of Rensselaer, NY., which may be of interest to someone. A Henry Lake disinherited his son Nicholas Lake, and left his estate to his great grandchildren, Nicholas, Polly, Hannah, and Henry Lake with Garrett Lake his executor. Parents: Daniel LAKE and Elizabeth GARMA.
