Samuel lived on a farm in Beekmantown, near Plattsburgh, on State Route 2. As far as Marion Mashtare knows, Sam had lived there since about 1930. She says that her father was the kindest, gentlest man she ever knew. Samuel never cursed or struck the children. When the kids were acting badly, all Sam had to do was give them a very stern look, and the kids straightened up. Samuel believed in religion, and always had the family go to church on Sunday. He didn't care what religion the kids choose, as long as they practiced it. He taught his children how to swim, ski, and ice skate. Samuel had met and married a widow by the name of Virginia Butler about 1934. Virginia had 2 daughters Mary, Violet, and a son named Frank. She believed that the girls should wear skirts or dresses, never pants. On Christmas, the Mashtare family celebrated by cutting their own tree from the farm and decorating it with some type of angel decorations. On birthdays, Virginia had made the children cakes and also made ice cream. The only heirloom passed down were a set of dishes that belonged to Sam, that are presently in the possession of Marion Mashtare. (25 May, 1998)

In the list of Veterans of the Town of Beekmantown NY there are listed: Charles, George, Harry, Herman, Joseph, Raymond and Samuel Mashtare. No details.

The 1925 NYS Census which lists this family. They lived in the Town of Beekmantown in what is known as the Lysand Oliver Place and because there were so many sons, they worked for others at the Marina and for farmers in seasonal work.
