INJURIES FATAL TO LOCAL MAN
Robert H. Mushtare, 32, Victim of Car Accident In West Carthage
Robert H. Mushtare, 32, of 531 Arsenal street, died at 2:30 this morning
in the House of the Good Samaritan of injuries sustained Saturday night at 9:45
when the car in which he was riding collided with another on the Martin street
road, two and a half miles north of West Carthage.
Mushtare, who was first removed to the Carthage hospital and then to the
Watertown hospital at 1:20 Sunday morning, suffered a punctured right lung, fractures
of ten ribs on the right side, a broken jaw and lacerations and abrasions of
the head and face. He had been in a critical condition since the accident.
State police of the West Carthage substation investigated the accident,
in which six other persons were also injured.
Mushtare was a passenger in a car driven by Bertrand J. Bernard, 30, of
352 Court street.
The other car was driven by Miss Ethelyn M. Vining, 53, of 116 Sterling
street.
Injured, besides Mr. Mushtare, were the drivers of both cars and Ward T.
Priest, 23, of 533 Arsenal street, a nephew, Gary Gault, 21, of Cape Vincent,
Charles Deline, 24, of 518 Coffeen street, and Franklin Deline, 19, of 525 Mill
street, passengers in the car Bernard was driving.
Priest was admitted to the Mercy hospital Monday afternoon with a possible
fractured skull and a scalp laceration. His condition is not critical.
The accident happened when the car Bernard was driving, a 1956 vehicle owned
by Mary Shirley Sanford, 220, West Main street, failed to negotiate a right curve
as it was traveling south. The vehicle proceeded 1,000 feet on the shoulder,
then crossed both lanes of the highway and struck the 1953 sedan owned and driven
by Miss Vining.
The Bernard car continued along the left shoulder of the road, tearing down
75 feet of guard posts and dropping down an embankment, according to state police.
Robert Harold Mushtare was born in Carthage on April 6, 1929, a son of Edward
Timothy Mushtare, Burlington, Vermont, and the late Clara Arquette Mushtare.

he worked for the St. Regis Paper Company as a laborer.

years. Most of his military service was in Germany with a tank battalion. He
was released from the Army in June, 1954, and for three years lived with a sister,
Mrs. DeEtta M. Brustowicz, South River, N.J., now of 205 Arsenal street.
While living in South River, Mr. Mushtare was involved in an automobile
accident in September, 1955, in which he was seriously injured, being hospitalized
for nine months.
In the fall of 1958, he returned to northern New York to reside with another
sister, Mrs. Edith Burto, Herrings.
For the past three years he had worked in restaurants as a short order cook.
