Generation No. 3

7. FLORA4 MCINNES (MARGARET3 MCLUCAS, JOHN2, ARCHIBALD1)6 was born February 02, 1857 in Raymond Terrace nr.Maitland, NSW, Australia7, and died July 27, 1925 in Devonport Road, Tauranga, New Zealand. She married SAMUEL HARDY June 05, 1877 in Presbyterian Church, Hokitika. He was born 1846 in Nottingham, England, and died March 31, 1909 in Waihi, New Zealand.

Notes for F
LORA MCINNES:
Born on Drimfine Estate, Cabbage Tree, near Raymond Terrace (Maitland area) N.S.W. Australia, and the birth registered in 1857/10696 . Her death certificate gives Raymond Terrace, NSW as her place of birth. This is east of Maitland, towards the coast and south of Clarence Town. Was 20 when she married Samuel in the Presbyterian Church in Hokitika, 5 June 1877. Two of her sons were given Clarence as a second name because she had connections with Clarence - either the river or more likely the town.

A Hardy relative says she remembers Flora telling her that the McInnesses came from Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

She died in 1925/2138 at home, Devonport Road in Tauranga, of cardiac failure and bronchitis. She was 68. Methodist burial in Tauranga Cemetery

Notes for S
AMUEL HARDY:
Speculative birth reference for Samuel Hardy is Nottingham, vol XV ?504 (illegible) 1845, Sup Registrars District 56. This from the St Catherine's index.

Married in the Presbyterian Church in Hokitika, 5 June 1877. Gave his age as 30 and occupation as miner. Born 1846 or 1847. If his son Charles is correct on his death certificate, he had been in New Zealand since about 1866, though given that he married Flora from Australia, when she was only 20, he may have gone back and forth between the two countries, or Charlie may have meant 1867 and got the maths wrong!

Family lore has it that Sam's father wanted him apprenticed to a trade which did not appeal to him, so he ran away, took a cattle ship to North America, and from there followed the trail of gold discoveries from California to Australia and to the West Coast of N.Z. where he married Flora, who had come from Australia to marry him. From there they settled in Tauranga where he established Hardy Transport. The family home was on Fourth Ave, Lot 469, Sec 2 in an 1881 roll. It was off Cameron Road close to what is now a medical clinic. On his death, he left a considerable fortune in property to his son Archibald, in trust for the daughters. Archie ran through it very quickly!

Death recorded 1909/192 in Waihi. He was 62 and appears to have died of complications of surgery for stomach cancer and consequent pneumonia. According to his son Charles, who lived in Waihi and reported the details, he was a coal merchant. Charlie had no knowledge of his grandparents' names and knew only that his father had been born in England. There is no record of his burial. He was survived by three sons and four daughters.
