Thomas J. Burton left Tennessee in 1850 going to Illinois. He settled in Jefferson County in Rome Township. There he raised two families, and buried some of his children. About 1885 his second son, Elijah Madison Burton, moved his family to Texas, where their descendants remain today. The Burtons seem to have been succeptible to TB,as several of the children died of "lung disease". That could have been the reason for the move to Texas, because in the ten years after the move, some of the children were moving to Arizona, and some died of TB in the move. The family was farmers and stockmen after the move to Texas, and nearly all of them became well to do, but there was always a hint of scandal in the family. As a result, I hsve almost reached the end of my information about the early members of the family.
