THIRD GENERATION

3. Sir Thurstan de HOLLAND ⁽¹⁾ was born about 1220 in Upholland, Lancashire, England.⁽¹⁾ He died after 1272 in Upholland, Lancashire, England.⁽¹⁾ He married three times. Thurstan de Holland first married the daughter of Adam de Kellet, through whom the Hollands acquired manors in north Lancashire, as Lonsdale, Furness, and Chartmel. By his first wife he had five sons, Robert, William, Richard, Roger, Adam, and a daughter Margaret. Thurstan next married Juliana, a daughter of John Gellibrand, and had four more sons, Thurstan, Adam, Elias, and Simon. He married thirdly a daughter of Henry de Hale, an illegitimate son of Richard de Meath, Lord of Hale.

An old Norman-French petition from the 'loyal tenants of Hale' states that as Henry de Hale lay dying; came one Thurstan de Holland, who had married the daughter of said Henry and as he lay at the point of death [come il launguist a la mort] his memory lost, the said Thurstan took the said Henry's seal which he had round his neck, and made use of the seal to issue charters granting the said manor of Hale to himself, the said Thurstan, and Robert his son. He put out some old tenants and introduced new ones, which, perhaps accounts for the allegation. This accusation may not have been true, but evidently Thurstan de Holland was one of those vigorous, driven, men who, by local efforts and marriages, founded families. He lived long and is described as Sir Thurstan de Holland in witnessing a charter to Stanlaw Abby in 1272. (Researcher - Jasper Land Holland, II).

He was married to (Unknown) de KELLET (daughter of Adam de KELLET) about 1254.⁽¹⁾ (Unknown) de KELLET⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1215.⁽¹⁾ The de Kellets of Over and Nether Kellett owned manors in north Lancashire; Cartmel, Furness and Lonsdale, which were inherited by Thurstan de Holande and his descendants. In 1080, according to The Domesday Book, the township was divided into Over and Nether Kellett. Adam de Kellett held three carncates of land in Kellett which the Sergeaantry of the Wapenlake valued at 50 pounds per year. Adam was the son or Oreme de Kellett who owned four carcates of land in Kellett and divided this land between his two sons, Bernard and Adam. Sir Thurstan de HOLLAND and (Unknown) de KELLET had the following children:

15 v. Roger de HOLLAND⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1259.
16 vi. Adam de HOLLAND⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1260.

He was married to Juliana GELLIBRAND (daughter of John GELLIBRAND) about 1262.⁽¹⁾ Juliana GELLIBRAND⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1215. Sir Thurstan de HOLLAND and Juliana GELLIBRAND had the following children:

17 i. Thurstan de HOLLAND⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1265.
18 ii. Adam de HOLLAND⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1266.
19 iii. Elias de HOLLAND⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1267.
20 iv. Simon de HOLLAND⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1268.

He was married to (Unknown) de HALE (daughter of Henry de HALE) about 1266.⁽¹⁾ (Unknown) de HALE⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1240. Sir Thurstan de HOLLAND and (Unknown) de HALE had the following children:

21 i. Thomas de HOLLAND⁽¹⁾ was born an estimated date of 1270. (Matthew de Holland database shows estimated date of birth to be 1250.
