Our family name is spelt BUTTIMOR but we know it was spelt BUTTIMER when my great grandfather came from Dunmanway, Ireland in 1860. His name was Thomas Buttimer. He came to Quebec city. He was a weaver and later settled in Merrickvill where there was a woollen mill.
Thomas' father was Abraham Buttimor. It was a tradition to name the eldest son Abraham. He married Ellen Barry. Abraham's brother, Robert, married Ellen's twin sister, Mary. Robert came from County Cork between 1812 and 1817. He died on the way but he rest of the family proceeded to land near Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada.
Thomas Buttimor said that his brothers also emigrated to North America; one to Vancouver, one to Conneticut and one to Chicago. The Buttimers in Chicago owned a meat packing company and were wealthy. There children were all girls.
Our Buttimor branch were all Protestants. The story we have heard is that the split between Catholic and Protestant Buttimers goes back to Thomas' grandfather. He was estate manager for an English Lord Grey. He married the Lord's only daughter, Mary. Because the Lord refused to let them marry, they eloped and were married in the Irish Portestant Church.
These facts were written down by my mother from stories told to her by my father. My father, born in 1904, listened to stories about Ireland as a boy from his grandfather, Thomas Buttimor.
