Notes for J
AN PEECK:
Jan Peeck, the first of his family in Americak, was probably born as early as 1615, but the place of his origin is undeterined. From the first, he was conversant in both English and Dutch and because the family name, particularly in Bergen county, New Jersey, was pronounced PAKE, gives rise to the probability the name was of English background. This belief is further extended by the fact his associations in New York with the families of Thomas Hall from Gloucester, England, and Carel Morgan from Newport, England. Thomas Hall was one of the sponsors at the baptism of Johannes, son of Jan Peeck, on Octaober 12, 1653 at New York. Jan Peeck and his wife were sponsors for Marie, daughter of Carel Morgan and Helena Applegate, his wife, on January 21, 1657 at New York.
The earliest record pertaining to jan Peeck appears to be his marriage in New York on February 20, 1650 to Marie Volchers (Volcheretsen), widow. His place of origin in this record, although usually given, is not given.
In "New Amsterdam and itsPeople" by J.H. Innes, page 301, he is reported as " Jan Peeck, an eccentric character, part Indian trader, part broker between the English and Dutch merchants, and part general speculator." It is this Jan Peeck who, by reason of his making use, as a tradingj post for traffic with the Indians, of the sheltered haven emptying into the Hudson River just south of the mountains of the Highlands ( even wintering there with his sloop) gave the stream the name " Jan Peek's Kill, which name is preserved in that of the adjacent village of Peekskill in Worchester County. His wife managed his property which probably came from Maria's first husband who was a tavernkeeper. She seems also to have accompanied him on his trading expeditions occasionally, where she apparently acquired considerable acquaintance with the Indians which she turned to advantage by selling them liquor. Jan Peek's name appeared in documents a number of times following his marriage, mostly in connection with tavern business, lawsuits and real estate.
