INSTEAD OF PRODUCE
CENTER OF ATTENTION SWITCHES TO INDIVIDUAL
By Sue Bullock Huggins
His likeness has often appeared in the pages of the Oxford Public Ledger, but heretofore the center of attention has always been the melon or tomato or pumpkin pictured with him.
This time it is R.H. " BUSTER" CIFERS himself who is featured. The initials stand for Richard Harvey, but Cifers says he is known only by his nickname--a name that had its origin in a child's heartbreak.
When I was about five years old," he says, "my little chicken died. I was sitting beside the road saying ' Poor little Buster's dead.' An old man that we knew heard me and started calling me Buster, and I've been going by Buster ever since.
It is a name to which he has brought dignity and significance, When their only son was born, Mr. and Mrs. Cifers named him Benjamin Buster, and in his case it is no nickname.
In addition to their son, who lives in Midlotian, Va., Mr. and Mrs. Cifers have three daughters: Mrs. Nell Ramsey of Clarksville, Va.; Mrs. Dorthy Elliott of Hopewell, Va. and Mrs. Frances Snarr of Mina, Nev. There are seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Born in northern Granville County near "old" Sudan, Cifers has lived in the county all his life except for a period during the early thirties--"Hoover days, I call it"--- when he was a salesman for a meat-packing company working out of Danville, Va.
He says he liked the work but wanted to get back to farming. His first farm was in the Gray Rock section, and it was there he met his wife, the former Inez Woodlief. They were married on Oct. 26,1934. "We've been married 51 years," Cifers says proudly.
Mr. and Mrs. Cifers have lived on their present farm on Rt.1, Bullock since 1949. He has not farmed for over 20 years. Until this year he had rabbits, quail, and pheasants, but now, fittingly, there are only chickens to be cared for.
Health problems, including diabetes, and cataracts, have plagued Cifers over the years. A stroke two years ago left both legs affected. This condition has forced him to curtail some of the gardening activities for which he has been so well-known. Nevertheless this past summer, he tended a garden of approximately an acre. On a fall day evidence of its bounty can still be seen. " I picked a dish of snap beans from the garden this morning." Mrs. Cifers says.
A turnip patch flourishes. There are cherry tomatoes, gourds, citrons, and pumpkins. Afew figs remain on a bush which was taken from one planted by Cifers' mother before he was born.
He points out nut trees and bushes--chestnuts, hazelnuts, and chinquapins. There are fruit trees, pears, cherries, Stark's delicious and Winesap apples, and grape vines, Concord and scuppernoug.
Cifers says he has been taking produce to the Ledger office for more years than he can remember. On display in his home are some of those Ledger pictures. One shows him with a 35-pound cabbage; another, with a load of watermelons.
I grow big stuff just to look at it and show it off, " he says. In order to do this he uses Vigoro, cottensead meal, ashes, fertilizer, and chicken compost. Noted for his generosity, Cifers takes product to neighbors in the community and to friends in Oxford and in Clarksville.
Hunting and fishing have also been life-long interests. "I've killed many a wild turkey and deer and quail, " Cifers says. For fishing there a a number of stocked ponds on the farm, one within sight of the house.
Mrs. Cifers has hunted and fished along with him. " When he fishes, I fish; when he hunts, I hunt, " she says. Asked which is the better marksman, she says they are about equally good.
Mrs. Cifers also enjoy all types of needlework---" Anything preety I can get to do." Both are members of Mountain Creek Baptist Church and are active in the Odd Fellows.
Mr. and Mrs. Ciferss house burned in 1971. Since then they have lived in a mobil home where late flowers---chrysanthemums, zinnias, marigolds, petunias---bloom around the door. The only problem, according to Mrs. Cifers, is finding room to accommodate the many jars of canned goods that she puts up each season. Among the items stored in boxes or on her shelves are tomatoes, snap beans, peaches, brunswick stew, beet pickle, apples, butterbean, tomato preserves, turnip greens, peppers, and cushaw. There is also a frezer filled with food.
" No one gives you a jar of anything anymore," Harry Golden once lamented. It is a pity he never visited the Cifers farm. There you are given more than one jar-- and Mrs. Cifers dill pickle recipe. You are given citrons, a large gourd, a bag of nuts.
There has been the simple pleasure of pulling up Jerusalem artichoke plants and digging out the tubers. You get those too.
And there are the buckeyes for luck that Cifers slips from his pockets. You now carry one of those, not because you believe in buckeyes or in luck, but because you believe in the enduring quality of Buster and Inez Cifers
