Harold Shepherd Atkins, 70, of 4208 Hope Valley Road, died Tuesday, April 23, at Rex Hospital in Raleigh after a lengthy illness. a native of Durham, he was the son the late Roy and Lida Atkins. Mr. Atkins was a charter member of the Hope Valley Baptist Church. He was retired from IBM after 20 years.

Jodie Hanes Atkins, 74 of 1113 Ninth St. died Wednesday at 3:45 P. M. at his home. He was born and reared in Durham County , Patterson Township, the son of Josiah Atkins and Mollie Barbee Atkins. He was educated in the Durham County schools. All of his life he had lived in Durham County, the greater part of which he engaged in farming. For several years he served as night supervisor of the Hill Building, retiring in 1947. He moved to Durham in 1944. Foe many years he had been a member of the Yates Baptist Church but for several years had been attending the Gospel Center. On Feb. 6, 1910 he was married to Miss Eva Latta of Durham County who survives as well as do four sons, Aubrey Atkins, Joe Atkins, Ralph Atkins and John Atkins, all of Durham County and four daughters, Mildred Atkins of the home, Mrs Ruth A. Parrish of Durham County, Mrs Faye A. Perry and Mrs Hazel A. Thomasson both of Durham, a daughter Myra Atkins Shepherd died in 1948.

Also surviving are two brothers, William T. Atkins of Viola Ark. and Charlie Thomas Atkins of Durham; one sister, Mrs Frank Elliott of Durham county; his stepmother, Mrs Alma Atkins Reece of Durham County; 23 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Gospel Center at a time to be announced pending arrival of relatives from out of town. Burial will be in the Atkins Family Cemetery, Hope Valley Road. Mrs. Shepherd died Tuesday night at the local hospital following several months of declining health. Heart trouble was the cause of death. Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters, Dorothy Marie, Sarah Elizabeth and Julia Helon Shepherd; and one son, Ralph K. Shepherd Jr., all of the home; her parents, Mr. And Mrs. Jodie H. Atkins of Durham, four brothers, Aubrey, Joe Alton, Ralph and John Atkins, all of Durham; four sisters. Misses Mildred, Fay and Hazel Atkins, all of Durham, and Mrs. J. L. Parrish of Durham County. The body will be taken to the church to lie in state one hour before the funeral service.

Serving as floral bearers will be members of the Woman's Missionary Society of the Berea Baptist Church. Mrs. Barbee died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. Fred Herndon, Patterson Township, off the Fayetteville Road, Wednesday morning at 4:30 o'clock. She had been in ill health for the past several years.

The deceased was born and reared in Orange County, now Durham County, Patterson Township, the daughter of William Atkins and Demarius Leigh Atkins. She was educated in the public schools of Orange County and lived all her life in her home community. Since girlhood she has been a member of the Berea Baptist Church. On Jan, 1, 1882 she was married to Jackson H. Barbee of Patterson Township, who died on Dec. 7, 1933. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. W. Fred Herndon and Mrs. W. E. Massey, both of Patterson Township; two sisters, Mrs. A. A. Harward and Mrs. S. J. Craig, both of Durham; two brothers, Hiram Atkins of this city and R. J. Atkins of Creedmoor. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was a member of the Hope Valley Baptist Church where he was a deacon and belonged to the O. K. Goodwin Sunday School Class. The Funeral will be conducted at 11 A.M. Tuesday in the Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Dr. James Murphy. entombment will be in the Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Atkins is survived by; two daughters, Mrs Margaret Cook and Mrs Clara Coshatt, both of Durham; two sons, Victor Atkins and Harold Atkins, both of Durham; a brother, Homer Atkins of Durham; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 P.M. today at Howerton-Bryan Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Pallbearers will be Henry Cooke, Wayne Webster, Greg O'Quinn, Billy O'Quinn, Stephen O'Quinn and Johnny Bivins. Flowers are acceptable, as are contributions to the Family Life Center, in care of Hope Valley Baptist Church, 6900 Hope Valley Road, Durham, N. C. 27707. Parents: Hiram Atkins and Mattie Clara Crabtree.

He was married to Lyda Carr Shepherd on 17 Jun 1917 in Durham, North Carolina. Children were: Garland Adolphus Atkins , Victor Earl Atkins, Harold Shepherd Atkins, Clara Eva Atkins, Margaret Atkins.
