Katherine was the daughter of Major Edward Dale of Lancaster County, and Lady Diana Skipwith, whose ancestry has been traced to King William I (The Conqueror) First Norman King of England. Her mother and father both had ties to the Royal Family of England and other countries. It is reported that her father gave she and Capt. Thomas Carter 3,200 acres of land in Lancaster County, Virginia upon their marriage.
