1841 England Census household: Thomas, Phillippa and Mary (9), Sarah (5), Thomas (3) and Elizabeth (2). His brother Robert and his family live a few houses away.

1851 Census Household: Thomas and Sarah, and their two sons, Edwin and William. And also three Campbell children from Emma's previous marriage: Sarah Elizabeth, Rolland and Maryetta. The house is a two-story frame dwelling.

1868: A transcription of the following letter written by Thomas Tonkin to his brother, Nicholas, in Cornwall was very kindly sent to me by Simon Jenkin, UK. The spelling, capitalization, etc. follows as in the copy received.:

"Darlington April 28 1868

"My Dear Brother Nicholas.

"I received your welcome letter on the eleventh last. And am thankfull to learn that you and my Dear Mother and the rest of my Beloved Brothers and Sister are still living and well. do not chide me my Dear Brother, for my long Silence. for be assured I received only one of your letters and have written twice to you. So they must have miscarried on both sides. after writing my last it Pleased the Lord to afflict me with A long and dangerous illnefs which terminated in inflammation I had three doctors. And with carefull nurseing and the Almightys blefsing I was restored to health. then followed a Series of afflictions my Family my Wife's health became very Delicate and it Pleased the Lord to take Elizabeth. She was ten years old when she died, with bowel complaint it seemed that the hand of the Lord was heavy on me for about ten years. for I met with many lofses. some heavy ones in my Circumstances. but I feel thankful his Mercy has followed me and has blefsed us with good health for the last eight years. my Dear Wife allso enjoys better health than formerly. we now reside on A small Farm which contains thirty three acres of land which my Wife holds during her life. my Wife had four children by her first husband who are all married and settled on Farms. we have had three children by our Second Marriage two sons and A Daughter. Edwin Albert is in his twenty first year. William Henry is in his eighteenth year and Emma Eva is in her fifteenth year. Edwin is teaching School and is one of our local Preachers. William works with me on the Farm and Emma helps her Mother in the house. My Dear Brother you forgot to say which of you our Dear Mother resides with. I should be very happy if it were so that I could see her once more, give her my best love and say that her absent Son Prays for the Blefsings of heaven to rest upon her and that she may lean Steadfast on the Rock of her Salvation. my son Thomas is Married and has three children Sarah is married allso her husband's name is Ambrose Grote. they have one Child A girl. they live in Michigan in the United States they have a Farm there but Thomas works at Pump Making. My Wife sends her love with mine to You and Yours and Remain you Affectionate Brother.
