About Our Family Research

This journey began in the early part of 2001. Initially I wanted to know a very specific part of my ancestry. However, as I researched and made contact with more people, my project grew to include a larger and larger number of people. History became even more exciting and real as I reviewed my own ancestors trials in their journeys to Canada. Many came to North America just as the continent began to be settled by Europeans, others have made the journey much later, while there are those who were here already for time unknown. I have become fascinated that I am descended from so many different peoples, the survivors of many amazing events. I believe that as such, I can truly call myself a Canadian. My roots are firmly twined into the soil of this nation. I took for granted who we Canadians were - I was born here, as were many generations of my family - but as I have researched my roots I have begun to truly appreciate this place called Canada. On both my parents sides I have United Empire Loyalist roots. People who were beaten to near death and driven from their homes by revolutionaries. I also have native American roots from the Cree and Nez Perce nations; one who openly embraced the incoming white people and the other who was decimated by the whites.
My wife too has roots which reach back to the Reformation and the persecution which came upon her people, sending them first to Prussia then to Russia and then here into Canada and the United States in search of religious and personal freedom.
