After growing up in a self supporting pastors home near Kitchener, Ontario, Wayne moved to Nappanee, Indiana with his family an 1956. He attended Messiah college 1955 to 57 then transfered to Greenville College, graduating in 1959 with a math major. He then went to Syracuse University for graduate work. Parents: Percy Wismer Cassel and Catherine Epp.

He was married to Ruth Anna Lehman on Jul 2 1960 in BIC Church, Carlisle, PA. After the wedding Wayne and Ruth went immediately to Syracuse for summer teaching duties and further graduate work. Wayne interupted his graduate program for two years to teach at Messiah College beginning the fall of 1962. Moving back to Syracuse, Wayne finally finished his Ph.D. in Mathematics in January 1967. They then moved back to Mechanicsburg and Messiah College and built their house near campus in the summer of 1967. After a career of 38 years at the college, Wayne retired in June 2000. Children were: Cynthia Lynne Cassel, Kevin Wayne Cassel Ph. D., Susan Joy Cassel.

Hubert Cassel came to Pennsylvania from Palatinate (Pfalz) province in Germany west of the Rhine River in the second immigration of Cassels to America. He arrived in Germantown PA about 1720 and settled in Skippack Township, Montgomery County. His brothers Yelles and Johannes also immigrated to America. Hubert was a man of delicate health, who never possessed much of this worlds goods. His will, in part, read "To my son Abraham I give my two looms with my whole weaving tacle." After Maria died, Jesse married Veronica Biehn September 15, 1889. They were Mennonite and resided near New Dundee, Ontario. Their home still stands south west of New Dundee on the road to Blenheim Cemetery. The wooden inscription on the gable end of the stone part of the house reads "Jesse and Maria Kassel 1858". Children were: Mary Ann O. Cassel, Isaiiah O. Cassel, Katie Ann O. Cassel, Josiah O. Cassel, William David O. Cassel.
