John entered the CSA on Aug 1, 1861 as a private in the "Schley County, Volunteers". He was later promoted to sergeant and surrendered at Appomattox, VA, at the courthouse on April 9, 1865. In the 1860 census he and his family were living in Schley Co., GA and in the 1870's he was in Macon Co., GA. In the 1920 census he and Nancy were found living with their son William in Worth Co., GA.
Letter from GA archieves---Col. M. Cottle wrote :
Captain R.P. Tandeez, Co. B, 17th GA Reg. Vol. 1st Sept. J.J. Kilcrease was born in Butts Co., GA, was ensisted at Ellaville 14th day of August 1865 to serve the war. He was last paid by Capt. R.E. Shorter AJM 17th GA. Reg., to include the #0th day of April 1864 and is entitled to pay there from the first day of Jan 1865. He is entitled to commutaties of clothing from the 17th day of Nov. 1863 and is entitled to Bounty of one hundred dollars for not being absent without leave for six months from the first day of April 1864. He is due the Confederate states for clothing issue to him the sum of $104 and is entitled to a funding for thirty six hours to go to Petersburg. I hereby certify that the above final statement is correct in ever particular

CONFEDERATE GEORGIA TROOPS
17th Regiment, Georgia Infantty
The 17th infantry Regiment was organzied in Stewart Co., GA during the summer of 1861. Its members were from Columbus and Decatur, and the counties of Webster, Schley, Harris and Stewart. Ordered to Virginia, the regiment was assigned to General Toombs and later Benning's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It served with the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, except when it was on detached duty with Longstreet at Suffolk, Chickamauga, and Knoxville. The 17th was active in the Petersburg trenches north of the James River and around Appomattox. In April 1862 it totalled 398 men, had 5 killed and 30 wounded at Malvern Hill, and lost 51% of the 200 engaged at Second Manassas. Of the 350 who saw action at Gettysburg, 29 % were disabled, and from April 14 to may 6 there were 86 casualties, then from August 1 to December 31, 1864, the unit had 45 killed or wounded. It surrendered with 18 officers and 168 men. The field officers were Colonels Henry. L. Benning and Wesley C. Hodges. Lieutenant Colonels William A. Barden and Charles W. Matthews, and Majors James B. Moore, John H. Pickett and Thomas Walker.
