Notes for J
OSEPH F. (JOE) WARD:
Joseph Ward and Judah Farmer Ward met and married in Missouri. Since she was under 18, her father gave consent for the marriage. They lived in Howell County where their first child was born. They lived briefly in Willford Co, AR where their second child was born, but moved back to MO for several years. Soon after 1898 the family moved to Mountain Home, Baxter County, AR.
While living in AR they built the town of Graceland (named after their daughter, Grace), which had a store, post office, hotel (operated by Judy and their daughters), lumber mill, and tenant houses. Joseph was secretary for these enterprises, which also included a mining refinery that he woned in Sharp County, AR. At one time he was the only person paying income tax in Baxter County. He was known in the area as the "Land Man". The following newspaper article is quotd from the Baxter County Bulletin of Mountain Home, date unknown.
The Great and the Near Great
      in the White River Country
Joseph Ward the Land Man of Mtn. Home enjoying his favorite
past time on the North Fork.
Joe Ward is classed as one of the most successful real estate men in the White River County. He has built his business on the solid foundation on the "Square Deal" and has prospered. His clients always find things just a wee bit better than they expected. Mr. Ward has put more people into Baxter county than any one real estate man has put in any county in the North part of the state, and they are satisfied people too. He has been by far one of the most potent factors to date, that the county has had for developement. He lived in the Ozarks for 30 years, and knows Ozark mountain soil like a book.
