His family moved to Arno, Missouri where Walter spent his early years. During WW II he served in the Army Military Police. After the war he lived in Temple, Texas where he was a policeman. On responding to a gas station robbery he was shot and died in the hospital the next morning.

Emma and Walter were divorced November 22, 1935.
