Notes for J
OSEPH LEWIS WARD:
Joseph Lewis Ward was born in Virginia. The first record of Joseph Lewis Ward, by family historian, Judy Nixon, was in Casey County, Kentucky in 1819 when he paid taxes on a horse worth $25.00. He was in and out of the tax records of that county after that. Perhaps he was just a young man or a pioneer looking for the right land on which to settle, or perhaps he had relatives in the area. Some family members believe he was married when he first came to Kentucky, but no such records have been found; if he was married, his wife died before 1824. Kewus was kusted as a member of the Holy Name of Mary Parish, Calvary (Washington County which is now Marion County, Kentucky) during the time of 1831 to 1836. The settlements of Clementsville and Calvary were about 30 miles apart. The Clementsville parish, called St. Bernards, was a mission of the one at Calvary, and it is possible that baptismal records were sent from Clementsville to Calvary in the early years, or that the priest from Calvary performed the baptismal rites in Clementsville and took the records with him to be recorded in Calvary when he returned.
Government census listing this family are: 1830 Casey County, KY; 1840 Adair County, KY; 1850 Daviess County, IN; Reeve Townshiip page 390 household and family 1536, lists: Lewis age 52 b:VA, Margaret 40 b:KY, John L 19, Rebecca 18, Nancy 17, James P. 14, Joseph 12, Lucy 10, Hilary 8, Lavina 5, Mary D. 2; 1860 census Daviess County, IN, Reeve Township, Alfordsville 649-638, lists: Lewis 62, a farmer, Margaret 49, James 24, Lucy Ann 20, Hillery 18, Levina 15, Mary Martina Dorina 12, Margaret 9; 1880 census Martin County, IN Perry Township 56-56 lists: Margaret 69, Mary 32.
It is an interesting puzzle that although Lewis was alive in 1860, Margaret and "her heirs", Levina, Mary and Margaret bought 40 acres in Daviess County on 17 January 1957 (for $32.50). Women in those days did not generally conduct legal transactions unless they were unmarried. Even one of the sons was "promoted" to head-of-household over the mother if the father died. It is possible Lewis was unable to function as the legal head of the house. Most of this same land was disposed of on 7 March 1874. Mary, Margaret Sr., Margaret Jr., and Lucy A. Ward and Nancy Summers (also a daughter) also sold 39 acres for $450.00 saving only one acre for themselves, possible the one acre had the home on it. Very soon after that, the same women (without Nancy) sold this acre to Nancy's husband Thomas Summers for $15.00.

  Notes for LOUVINIA (LAVINA) WARD:
Louvinia's first husband, Elza Miles, was killed in the Civil War; they had one child who died young. Second husband, Bazel Clements, was a farmer; they were listed in the 1870 census with property valued $2,700.00 (quite a bit of money for those times); with them on the census was a 63 year old woman named Mary Burch. One wonders if this was a relative or a nurse if Louvinia was ill and died a little over a year later.

  Notes for ELIZA B MILES:
Eliza B died as a Union Army private in the Civil War at Louisville, Kentucky.
