Notes for J
OHN LEWIS WARD:
John Lewis Ward was born either Washington County (now Marion) or at Casey County, Kentucky. His christening was recorded, by Father John Wathen, at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church 1 May 1831. Elizabeth Montgomery was his sponsor. John's firt federal census, at age 9, was in Adair County, Kentucky, 1840, but he ws not named specifically, only the head of the household was named. In the 1850 census of Daviess County, Indiana, John L. was listed as 19 years of age, a farmer, and living in the household of his parents. In 1857 John married Susan Amanda Miles. Susan was almost 19, John was 27. The marriage was performed by a Justice of the Peace in the home of the bride's parents. On 23 November 1857 they repeated their vows at St John's Church in Loogootee, Indiana; Father J. Mougin performed the ceremony which was witnessed by John and Nancy Somers.
Family tradition says that John and Susan were second cousins. John and Susan lived in the same neighborhood since they were teenagers; their parents had been friends in Kentucky before moving to Indiana.
John was a farmer when he was drafted into the Union Army 14 August 1862 to fight in the Civil War. Child #3 was just over a month old at the time. John was enrolled in Co. B of the 80th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry commanded by C.S. Dobbins and William Mosier. He had a difficult time during his time in the army.
As stated in 1890 on his application for an invalid pension: In December 1862 at Columbia, Kentucky, he "contracted a severe cold which resulted in disease of lungs and disease of kidneys and resulting general debility and diarrhea and rhumatism and failur of heart. He was also treated for lung fever at Kingston, Tennessee in November and December 1863". He was in three hospitals in Kentucky during this time--Columbia, Louisville, Elizabethtown--seeking relief from the above problems. Another member of John's company said that John was coughing, complaining of pains in his lungs, and was spitting up blood. He was also treated for chronic hepatitis. Almost three years after he entered the army, he was honorably discharged at Salisbury, North Carolina on 22 June 1865.
At age 59 John's physical appearance was listed on his army pension application as 6 feet tall, black hair, gray eyes and a fair complexion. At this timehe stated that although he had been in good, sound physical condition when drafted, he was now "entriely disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above listed, received in the service of the United States.
The family lived in several places in Indiana and Missouri before settling in Hutton Valley, Howell Co., Missouri sometime before 1885. Even after these many moves trying to improve their financial circumstances, the family remained poor. John and Susan were raised as catholics so they raised their family as Catholics.
1870 Census, Daviess Co, Indiana, Reeves Township 245-219: John age 39; Susan A. 30; Joseph 9, Susan 8, Elizabeth 4, Charles 2.
1900 Census in Hutton Valley: Susan stated she had given birth to 13 children, 9 pf which were living. John and Susan had living with them their two single sons, William and George.

Notes for S
USAN AMANDA MILES:
Susan Amanda Miles had much sorrow to bear during her life. She lost four children; carried on the family welfare while John was away at war for three years; and when he returned he was not well and found it difficult to support the growing family. After almost forty-seven years of marriage, she became a widow. After John's death, she lived with her children. On the 1910 Census of Howell Co, Missouri, she appeared living with her unmarried son, George. In her ovituary, all nine of her living children were mentioned as having provided her witha home at some time during the thirteen years she lived as a widow.
On March 26, 1911, the house at Hutton Valley, Missouri and its contents were destroyed by fire. Susan had to get an application for a new pension certificate. She then lived at RFD #1, Pomona, Missouri. Her daughter, Elizabeth McCann, signed as her witness. When making application for the pension, other witnesses judged the value of her personal property to be $230, and her 125 acres were valued at $300. When the new certificate was issued, it showed that as a result of John's service in the army, Susan had been paid $8.00 a month (from 1904-1908). The amount was raised in 1908 to $12.00. At the time of her death in 1917, she was receiving$20.00 per month.
When Susan died, her daugher, Rose J Robbins, made application for reimbursemnet from her mother's pension in order to for her burial. They had no life, accident or health insurance for Susan. She left no money, real estate, or personal property of any kind. The cause of death was listed as "enterocolitis". she had been ill from June 23 until July 13 and staying at home with Rose at Hutton Valley. Her sickness and burial expenses were listed: Physician, T. Ferrell $36.80; Medicine, furnished by physician; nursing care, daughter, no charge; undertaker, W.M. Hubbs $10.00; livery, F.M. Haynes $10.00; cemetery, no charge. The family had to ask the government for $56.00
John and Susan are buried side by side at the White Church cemetery, n the little graveyard behind the little Catholic Church at White Church, Missouri. She has no headstone to mark her grave.
