Notes for A
NNAMARI ELISABETH KAUFFMANN:
(Written by Melinda Chapin 12 Oct 1982 from notes received from Annamari)

From my father's sided of the family, my great-grandmother was born in Austria, Hungaria. At the time they were speaking German. My great-grandfather was born in Paris, France, but later moved to Germany. My grandmother was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, later moving to Kansas City, Missouri, then to Twin Falls, Idaho. My grandfather was born in Lawton, Oklahoma, later moving to Twin Falls, Idaho.

My great-grandparents came to America in 1802 (later proved to be untrue, typo?) They came from Germany. Great-Grandma came to America because she was visiting some relatives in Pittsburg and decided to stay. My great-grandfather had the same idea in mind.

My grandfather faced many hardships along the trip to America. His first intentions wre to serve two years in the army, but in order to do that he would have to move to Germany because living in France,as he was, he would have to serve three years. He then moved to Germany, served two years and boarded a ship. His troubles were not throught, yet. He had to work his way over to America. Grandpa worked in the boiler room of the ship, which at the time was using coal, for an hour at a time because of the heat. He did come to America once, but couldn't gt off. Working for another trip, he finally made it backa nd an old sailor sneaked him off the ship. When Grandpa reached New York City, he had $1.00 to spend.

My grandparents met in Pittsburg, Pennsylavania and married in 1804 (1905).

Yes, I do have one famous reative. His name is Eli Whitney, and for those who don't know, he invented the first cotton gin.

(Written by Melinda Chapin between 1983-1986 from notes received from Annamari)

In 1932, Marie chapin was twenty-six years of age, living in Kimberly, Idaho at the time of the Great Depression. She and Art Chapin, my late grandfather, lived in Kimberly from 1931-1937 then moved to Twin Falls.

When my grandmother and grandfather lived in Kimberly they rented a home. Then they moved to Twin Falls and they rented two lots for $10 a month. My grandparents owned a cow, which helped a lot. My grandfather built the house they lived in for 44 years.

With four kids and a wife to support, my grandfather worked several jobs. Whatever he could find, sugar factory, he worked at the Falls, he was a carpenter for a while, he also worked for the campaign WPA. If you made $3 a week you were doing great. When my gandfather worked on the campaign he was making $44 a month.

The main diet came from the chickens, the gardens, calves and hogs they raised. Hamburger was 3 pounds for $0.25, milk $0.10 a quart, bread $0.10 a loaf, and cereal was $0.25 a box. They heard once of some apples at a warehouse that were washed, sorted and only $0.10 a bushel.

They made all their clothes.

My grandparents did own a car, sometimes it wouldn't work and they would have to walk to town. When my grandparents were just married they stopped in Wyoming for gas. They paid $0.09 a gallon for gas.

For entertainment, there was always the radio, but then people visited a lot more than they do now. They didn't have much gas to go camping nor did they have much money to go to the movies.

Most people took things just right here in the west. There were hard feelings just as anything else, but out here there were hardly any hard feelings. If they had enough to eat that was all that mattered.

My grandmother said the depression had no effect on her lifestyle today. It really didn't hurt them, they were young and could take the hardships. She doesn't look for another depression as some people would.

Some people were lucky if they had one meal a day which was usually a stew. Sometimes the cities would run out of money, but the government usually helped. (note: the government helped after Roosevelt became President)

Every Friday, the goverment sent food out to the people who worked for the WPA. My grandfather and his friend, Lou Hall, received this list: Butter, flour, salty canned meat, oranges (sometimes), rice, noodles, and cornmeal for cornmeal mush.

My aunt Ann couldn't drink cow's milk so my grandmother fed her daughter canned morning's milk. As she did with all of the kids.

The depression ended and things were back to normal.
