John Melton Coleman, Jr. (son of John Melton Coleman and Jessie Lee Coleman) was born September 21, 1923 in Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida, and died July 17, 1988 in Clearwater, Pinellas County, Florida. He married Melissa Anne Lewis on June 12, 1949 in Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida.

John being a Junior was called Melton growing up. He lived in Gainesville, Florida He started school in September, 1929 and attended the first grade at Gainesville High School. Due to illness he repeated the second grade. He had an above average IQ. On July 25, 1939 he moved to Waycross, Georgia where he attended Waycross Jr. High and Waycross Sr. High. On February 24, 1942, we moved to Jacksonville, Florida where he entered Robert E. Lee Sr. High. There he completed the 11th grade since he had also repeated the 8th grade. He decided to quit school in the 12th grade and volunteer for the army engineers. He was sworn in at Camp Blanding, Florida in November, 1942 and was assigned Army Serial Number 14 085 752 then was sent to the 324th Engineering Battalion of the 99th Infantry Division at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi. (his brother Leon also served in the 99th but after he left it.) After completing his basic training, he was sent to the 1st Cavalry Division at Ft. Bliss, Texas. He was assigned to Troop B, 8th Engineering Squadron, in the 1st Cavalry Division. He went overseas with them landing in Australia in May, 1943. His overseas address was Troop B, 8th Engineering Squadron, 1sr Cavalry Division, APO 201, San Francisco, Califormia. He went on to fight in New Guinea, landed D-Day in the Admiralty Islands, landed D-Day on Leyte and ended up in Manila on Luzon in the Philippines. He was a combat engineer. He earned 2 arrows for D-Day invasions and 4 battle stars for campaigns he fought in. He landed with the first ground troops in Japan after they surrendered on September 2, 1945. Upon returning to the US, he entered the University of Florida in November, 1945 and subsequently graduated with a BS BA Degree on June 6, 1949. He was married to Melissa Anne Lewis on June 12, 1945 in Gainesville, Florida at the First Presbyterian Church. His besr man was his brother Leon.He moved to Tampa, Florida when he was hired as a Management Trainee by Borden Dairy. He was appointed Assistant Manager for Borden in Clearwater, Florida. Later he took a job as a salesman for an aluminum products company. He was promised a interest in the business when the father-in-law retired. The son-in-law reneged on the promise so he opened up his own company, West Coast Awning Company. They sold aluminum awnings, carports, family rooms, et cetera. He was very successful. He did larges projects such as condominiums, housing projects and shopping centers as well as individual homes and businesses. He employed his wife, Anne, youngest son, Mark and his daughter, Linda in the business. After his death from cancer on July 17, 1988, they continued in the business until Anne also died of cancer on March 15, 1992. After Anne died, Mark and Linda continued to successfully run the business. On February 8, 2002, Linda was killed in an auto accident. Recently, Mark and Linda's two daughters, Sarah and Rachel decided to sell the business. Mark is still employed there as a salesman which he is extremely good at. His oldest son, John Melton III, went to the University of Florida where he earned a BS degree in Engineering and a Master's in Business Administration. He later earned a Ph D in Physics from Florida State University. He now works for Toshiba in San Francisco, in research and dedvelopment of Magnetic Imaging devices for Toshiba.
