Melton was in the Pacific and Leon left a few days later for England. Both were in combat. Melton escaped without a scratch but Leon was seriously wounded. Janie married Al Asenjo on October 13, 1946 and Sylvia moved with them to Daytona Beach, Florida in 1947 following Al's graduation from the University of Florida. Sylvia worked for the Veterans Administration in Bay Pines, Florida as a microbiologist. She divorced Stan after about 13 years of marriage and married Al Herbert Bernstone on December 21, 1967.

Sylvia decided to return to the University of Florida and get her Ph D in microbiology. She received this in 1972 whereupon she went to work at the VA Hospital in Gainesville doing kidney research.
