Notes for William Philip Coleman:
William was a farmer in the Bluff Springs area of Choctaw County, Mississippi.
His father, Absolum Melton Coleman, was a Confederate Veteran who enlisted April 26, 1862 at Pidgeon Roost, Mississippi. Absolum served as a Private and later as a Sergeant in Company E, 31st Mississippi Regiment. He fought at the Battle of Peachtree Creek and commanded his company after all of the officers had been killed. I believe this battle occurred near Atlanta in 1964. I had heard verbally that he was also at Vicksburg in 1863. I haven't confirmed this. He survived the war and fathered 11 children of which William was one of his 2 sons. He was a farmer. He died March 7, 1908 and is buried at the Bluff Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Choctaw County, Mississippi. There is a newspaper clipping from the Webster Progress which I assume was printed near the date of his death. I have a copy of his obituary. It recites his service in theConfederate Army.
William was also a member of the Bluff Springs Baptist Church and he too is buried in their cemetery. He was married twice. His first wife, Mary El Brock died of tuberculosis at age 25, They had one son, John Melton Coleman. He was two when she died on July 22, 1891. William then married a widow, Ida Beatrice Brooks Fonderen, who had 1 son. Joseph Thomas Fonderen, ( "Josh" ) born December 9, 1885, who was 2 years older than John. They had 7 more children.
