Includes NotesNotes for William Henry Morton:
At the time of the Civil War, he resided in Anson County, North Carolina. He was a mechanic by profession. On April 22, 1861 he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 14th N. C. Regiment (originally the 4th Regiment), He was present or accounted for until he lost an arm at the Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia on July 1, 1862. It was a frontal assault by Gen. Lee against Union Troops lead by Union Gen. Porter of McClellan's army, It was a bloody battle with thousands of dead and wounded. Malvern Hill is on the James River at Harrison Landing. He was reported absent, wounded until discharged February, 1863, by reason of disability. I know from photographs that his arm was amputated at the shoulder. I think it was his left arm. We had originally thought he had been wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines which occurred May 31-June 1, 1862. Seven Pines is fairly close to Malvern Hill so it is posible he may have been in that battle too.

His wife, Mrs. M. A. (Mary Agnes McGraw Morton), applied for a Confederate Pension from the State of Mississippi on July 15, 1924. She recited that she lived in Blue Springs, Union County, Mississippi. She stated she was married in Marshall County, Mississippi to W. H. (William Henry) Morton. She says her husband enlisted on June 11, 1861 in Richmond County, N. C. in the 4th Reg., N. C. Vol.Co. C, Col. Daniel, and that he was discharged after losing an arm on July 1, 1864 (this should have been 1862). A copy of the application is in my records which were given to me by Dr. William McDonald Morton of DelRay Beach, Florida. He is my second cousin. His grandfather, William Thaddeus Morton (Uncle Bud) and my grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Morton Coleman were brother and sister

In the Sec. of State Reg Commission 1892-1895 there are two references to him. The first concerned his appointment as a Justice of the Peace 3rd District, Tate County, in 1891. The second notation states: Nov.22, 1893 Appt by Governor Vice W. H. Morton resigned. The second referred to his election to the office of Mayor of Popular Spring, Union County, Mississippi on December 5, 1894.

These notes were sent to Bill Morton by another cousin, Craig W. Morton, P. O. Box 128401,
Nashville, TN 37212 by letters of Dec. 4, 1995 and Dec. 19, 1995.

He also sent photographs of the tombstones of William Henry and Mary Agnes Morton which are in the Wallerville Baptist Church Cemetery in Blue Springs,Union County, Mississippi. Copies of these are in my possession.
