Includes NotesNotes for Alston Robb McKinstry:
Alston Robb McKinstry I believe was born in Jacksonville, Florida. He lived in Gainesville, Florida when he met my mother. He served in World War I in the army. He was a motorcycle dispatch rider. He was involved in an accident in which he smashed one of his ankles. He had a silver plate in his ankle so he walked with a limp. He did not go overseas for that reason. He met his first wife, Addie, who was an army nurse. They had two children. A son, Alston Robb McKinstry, Jr. and a daughter, Alice McKinstry. On February 11, 1941 at 1:00AM near Waldo, Florida the car in which they were riding overturned when the left front tire blew out killing Alston, Jr. and injuring his sister, Alice. One other boy was killed and 2 other boys in the car were injured. There is a newspaper clipping in my diary that covers the accident. As I recall, Alston, Jr. was driving the car. My step-father was a talented artist and could write and draw with both hands. He bought an old wooden mandolin at a pawn shop and restored it. It had the classic curved body. He could play it quite well. He had one sister, Her daughter, Claire McKinstry Duggan was in my graduating class at Robert E. Lee Sr. Hight School in Jacksonville, Florida in 1943. I saw her at our 40th reunion in 1983. She has since died. He had an aunt, Miss Belle McKinstry, who was my second grade teacher at Gainesville High School. At that time GHS had all 12 grades under one roof. We lived in Waycross, Georgia from July 25,1939 until February 24, 1942. He worked for Bailey Monument Company selling mausoleums and tombstones. Later, he drew houseplans for a local lawyer who was building houses as a side-line. We moved to Jacksonville, Florida in February 24, 1942 when he took a job with the U. S. Corps of Engineers. We lived at 1382 Ingleside Avenue. He later was hired by the shipyard in Jacksonville, Florida to oversee the electrical systems on the Liberty Ships they were building. When I was discharged from the army on August 3, 1945, I visited him for a few days. He had me signed on as a crew member on a new ship for the "shake-down" cruise. It was a one day cruise but was interesting. He later married a Mrs. Jones, who owned Jones Business College. I don't know when he died. I lost contact with him after he remarried.
