Updates. Week of Jan 9 - 15, 2000 Collier Genealogy Homepage I have added 150 - 200 postings to the GEDCOM, only one of which is a Collier surname - John Collier, of Northport, Maine (abt. 1787 - Oct 6, 1871). Although the evidence is indirect, I believe John is the brother of Rev. Roland Collier, making both sons of Gershom Collier, of Scituate, Mass, later of Maine. Both John and Roland were probably born in Massachusetts, as Gershom was in Scituate until the early 1790s, but the family was in Northport (now in the state of Maine) by 1800. Sergeant John and Private Roland Collier briefly served in the militia from Northport during the War of 1812. [Records of Massachusetts Militia in the War of 1812, Adjutant General of Massachusetts, Boston, 1913., page 302 - In Capt. J. Frye's Co., Lt. Col. J. Ulmer's Regt., served Sept. 2 - Sept 21, 1814. Raised at Northport, service at Belfast [Maine, about 6 - 10 miles north of Northport, on the coast]]. John (died Oct. 6, 1871 ae 84)and his wife, Mary, maiden name unknown (died Nov. 6, 1871 ae 74), along with daughter Lucy A. (about Jan - June 28, 1835), and an unnamed infant daughter (died May 13, 1836), are buried in a cemetery off Beech Hill Road, Northport. Also there are Gershom Collier (d. Nov 2, 1822, ae [8]4 yrs,) and his wife Abigail Nash Collier, (died Nov 23, 1831). The GEDCOMs now contain about 325 persons of the Collier surname, and over 3300 total individuals. More Maine information - On a site called Sue's Genealogy Site Data page (I didn't copy a link, but the site is -- http:/ / www.irons-assoc.com/ ~sue/ SUEWEBGEN.wbg/ wga21.html. ) is some miscellaneous Collier information, not organized well, as far as I could see. There was, however, some added information on the family of Lucy A. Collier (1821 - 1890) and Jason Hills (1817 - _). There is at least one other Hills family, and various Collers, Collars, etc. -- probably unrelated to the Thomas line. 12. webGED: Sue's Genealogy Site Data Page Personal page: http:/ / www.irons-assoc.com/ ~sue/ SUEWEBGEN.wbg/ wga21.html ... (1862 - ) ...End of copied portion Ohio Tid-Bits I have had the opportunity to do a little added research into my Ohio Collier family, and found two new items: My GG Grandfather John Collier (Aug 24, 1802 - After Nov 20, 1851) married his second wife, Sarah A. Dayton (dates unknown) on Nov 20, 1851 (family record), after the death of his first wife, Mary Samson, in Mantua, Portage County, Ohio on April 30, 1850. I find the marriage location was Burton, Geauga County, about 15 miles north of Mantua. (Geauga County Marriage Records) The Geauga County record is probably the issue of the marriage license, in Burton, on Nov 19, 1851. I have still found no information on the later movements of John and Sarah. I do not find them in any later Geauga County records I have checked. (I have not been able to do a search in local libraries yet - I would expect to find records in Ohio, Michigan, or Iowa.) I have found what I believe to be the marriage record of a son of John and Mary Samson, Lyman Collier ( Oct 03, 1823 - July 26, 1907). The Geauga County marriage records have the marriage of Lyman and Julia Melinda Giles, in Bainbridge, Geauga County, on September 13, 1848. This town is about 12 miles northwest of Mantua, so the date and the place are right. There were several Giles family members in Bainbridge in the 19th Century, but I cannot identify the parents of Julia at this time. Lyman had at least two children - Charles and John - and died in Pompeii, Gratiot County, Michigan in 1907. I have no other information on this family at present. Possible earlier marriage of Jane Clark, wife of William Collier of Plymouth -- 1-16-2000 Although this information cannot be confirmed, I am posting the marriage of William Collier and Jane Clark as her second. This will allow me to include Sarah Walker and Nathaniel Warren, et. al. in the GEDCOM. They resided in Plymouth Colony. Sources-- The Great Migration Begins, Immigrants to New England 1620 - 1633, Robert Charles Anderson, NEHGS, Boston, 1995, Vol I, pages 446-450. Pages 448-449 " ...On 19 November 1645 Nathaniel Warren, son of RICHARD WARREN, married at Plymouth Sarah Walker [PCR 2:94]. On 7 June 1653 'Mrs. Jane Collyare in behalf of her grandchild the wife of the said Nathaniel Warren' petitioned Plymouth Court in a land dispute [MD 3:141]. John Insley Coddington has suggested that when William Collier married her, Jane Clark was a widow, and that by her Clark husband she had a daughter who married a Walker [TAG 51:92-93]. Coddington further suggests that the Sara, daughter of William Walker, who was baptized at St. Olave's, Southwark, on 10 November 1622 was the grandchild of Jane Collier who married Nathaniel Warren. If this solution proves to be correct, it would also explain the 1650 land transaction in which William Collier granted to 'my kinsman William Clark' [PCR 12:182]...." Plymouth Colony, Its History and People, 1620-1691, Eugene Aubrey Stratton, Ancestry Publishing, Salt Lake City, 1986. pages 266 - 268. Page 268 has a short mention of Jane Collier's claim of 7 June 1653 (see above). Stratton identifies the granddaughter as Sarah (Walker) Warren, wife of Nathaniel. Both Anderson and Stratton cite the close connections between the Cole, Collier and Clark families in Plymouth. A relevant source is John G. Hunt, "Origins of Three Early Plymouth Families: Cole, Collier, and Clarke," TAG 42:119, which I have not seen yet. I have added the Warren family - Sarah Walker - Jane Clark information to my files, with qualifications, and will post some comments with my next research update.
