Notes for Sunday 1-23-2000 Collier Genealogy Maine Census and other Notes - Rev. Roland Collier -- Northport and Washington, ME Roland was in Northport, Hancock Cty. (now Waldo County), in 1820, and in Washington, Lincoln Cty., ME, in 1860. He was a Methodist minister. Roland Collier also listed in Washington, Lincoln County, Maine in 1840 and 1850 Maine Census. [This is now in Knox County, about 22 miles west of Northport. John Collier -- Northport, ME Probably the brother of Rev. Roland Collier, but not proven conclusively. 1-16-2000 Update John Collier is listed in the Maine Census, 1830 through 1860, in Northport, Waldo County -- I have not had access to later Census indexes. In 1820, there is a Joseph Collier listed in Northport, but he does not reappear there. This is possibly a mistake for John. Abner Collier -- Avon, Franklin County, ME Abner is listed in Avon, Franklin Co in the 1840 Franklin Co., and in Freeman, Franklin Cty. in 1850. Abner Collier (1794-1873, is buried in the Pease Thompson Cemetery, Avon, Franklin county, with his wife Caroline "d. 5/29/1856, aged 53 years. Also there is an Ezra Collier, unidentified. Note the discrepancy between the birthdate given in the tombstone record (1794) and the Feb 16, 1792 date in the Family Search LDS data. Likely either an error, or an earlier Abner who died in infancy. [Wade C. 1-23-00] Eben/Ebvenezer Collier -- Franklin County, ME "Eben" Collier is lsted in the 1860 Maine Census in Freeman, Franklin County, where Abner was in 1850. This is possibly the Ebenezer, born in Farmington, ME, Oct 11, 1794 to Gershom and Sally/Sarah Hovey Collier. Gershom and Sally Collier -- Avon, Franklin County, ME Sarah Hovey Collier is probably the Sally Collier in the 1850 and 1860 Maine Census, in Avon, Franklin County. This probably indicates that Gershom Collier had died between 1820 and 1850, unless he was the Gershom Collier who married in Avon, June 12, 1828, Margaret Dickey. That could have been a son of the same name. [NEHG Register vol. 109, p 182-183 (Jul 1955) There also was a Sally, daughter of Gershom and Sally Hovey Collier, born in Farmington, ME, 25 Oct, 1800, about whom I have no later information. Early Collier Families in New England -- Preliminary Notes and Overview These are very preliminary comments and notes, designed to help new researchers quickly see what material Mike Collier and myself have posted on our homepages, and guide them to records of other families who passed through New England. I do not claim any expertise, except in the family of Thomas Collier, of Hingham, Mass., 1635. The other information is scattered, random stuff that I have collected in passing, and I offer it in the hope that it will be useful to newcomers to the field. Massachusetts -- William Collier Plymouth and Duxbury 1633 -- No male descendants. Information on his 4 daughters -- Rebecca, Sarah, Mary, and Elizabeth -- is in my report. Elizabeth married Constant Southworth, and a descendant, Bridget Southworth, married a descendant of Thomas Collier of Hingham in 1734. Thomas Collier Hingham 1635 -- Subject of our main research . The main dispersions we have traced are: Thomas (2, cir. 1622 - 1691) and Gershom (3, cir. 1674 - 1753), whose children remained largely in South Shore Mass. and Maine; Moses (2, cir. 1625 - 1684), married to Elizabeth Curtis (1) and Elizabeth Bullard (2), who moved about 1683 with nearly his entire family to Woodbridge, New Jersey, later Bernards, Somerset County, and vicinity, where several generations remained; Thomas (4) and Bridget Southworth Collier, who moved with their family members Jane Collier House (5), and Gershom, Anna and Rebecca Collier (6), children of Bosworth (5) and Ann House Collier, to Chesterfield, Mass., starting about 1780 (?); Gershom Collier (5, born 1738, Scituate, Mass), who moved to the vicinity of Northport, ME cir. 1795 (?) with his wife Abigail Nash; Gershom Collier (6, born Weymouth, MA, 1765), who moved to Farmington, ME in 1790 with his half brother Col Ezekiel Porter, and married Sarah/Sally Hovey; John (7, born 1802, Boston - after 1850) who moved to NE Ohio about 1830 with his wife, Mary Samson, some of whose descendants may have moved to Michigan and Iowa; Rev. Roland Collier (6, 1784 - 1851), wife Lois Newhall, who lived in the vicinity of Northport, Washington and Union, ME; Cyrus T. Collier (7, 1827 - 1894), wife Eva Warren, who moved from ME to Montana; John Wesley Collier (7, 1829 - 1891) who moved from ME to California; William Collier (4, 1721 - 1794), wife Judith Briggs, of Scituate, Mass, whose descendants, many of them mariners, lived in Scituate and Cohasset, Mass. until at least the early 20th century; Rev. William Collier (6, 1771 - Unk), wife Abigail ___, sometime minister in Charlestown, Mass; James or Madison Collier (7, born 1809, Chesterfield - Unk), wife Dorinda Drewry, some of whose descendants still live in the area of Swanzey, NH and Northfield, Mass.; and William Collier (7, cir. 1803 - 1885), son of Gershom of Boston and Chesterfield, Mass, married to Parnel Shaw (1) and Rebekah Hathaway (2), some of whose descendants moved to the vicinity of Canton, New York. John Collier Proprietor at the founding of Hull, MA - 1642. Nothing further known. John Coller, or Collor -- Watertown, Mass Took oath of fidelity in 1652. Married Hannah Cutler. See records of this family at the website Collier Lineages, posted by Bob Coller ( http://epsilon.pair.com/phazel/collier/genweb/Coller-Cutler/Coller-Cutler.html ). Some members of this family were also in neighboring Cambridge, and are reported as having moved early to the inland towns of Sudbury, Natick, Framingham, and also to Oxford and other towns around Worcester, Mass. Spelling may be Collier, etc. in some secondary sources. Joseph Collier, possibly passing through Salisbury, Mass., married Elizabeth Sanford, and was probably in Hartford, CT by 1662-1666. He was probably the first Collier in CT. (See also, CT listings). An Ambrose Collier is listed as coming from Barbados to Boston in Mar 1678, in the ship Society (NEHGR vol 8, page 206.) Nothing further noted. Nathaniel Collar (probably of the Sudbury family - see above) married Mary Barrett in Chelmsford, MA, 10 Oct, 1693. Richard Collier married Mary Jarvis in Boston, 25 Jan, 1699. This Richard may be of the family of John Coller (see above), and may be an ancestor of the Richard Collier who married Mary Green in Boston, Jan 1, 1759. Descendants of the latter moved to Litchfield, CT, Binghamton, NY, and Steubenville, Ohio. Between 1700 and the Revolution, there were Colliers/variants in Boston, Dorchester, Cambridge and Watertown, New Marlborough ( Berkshire County -- mostly spelled Coller), the South Shore (my branch), the Oxford, MA and southern Worcester County area (earliest by 1739 ? - through 1850 Vital Records: 51 + births, 22 + marriages, and 22 + deaths in Oxford, many spelled Collar or Coller), Marblehead (earliest by 1709 ? - through 1850 VRs: 68 Collier, 22 Collyer births, 15 Collier, 34 Collyer marriages, and 2 Collier, and 30 Collyer deaths), Salem (the earliest by 1710 ? - through 1850 VRs: 15 births, 11 marriages, and 8 deaths -- Collier the common spelling, with a few Collyer and Colyer). Many of the families in Salem and Marblehead - neighboring towns - were no doubt related, and I suspect that some of the New Marlborough individuals -- 2 in 1771, 5 in 1790 --were from the Worcester County Collers. In a listing of Boston Marriages from 1700 to 1809 are 11 marriages of Colliers I have been unable to identify in the South Shore families: Collier information from Boston Births to 1800, Boston Marriages from 1700 to 1809 December 23, 1998 Marriages: Southworth Collier and Hannah Morton, April 13, 1774 Page 435 Southworth lived in Hull, and should be of "my" family, but I cannot identify the name. Gershom Collier (b. 1765) moved to Farmington in 1790. Gershom Collier (b. 1738) moved from Scituate, Mass. to Northport by 1800. There were other families in Maine by 1800, including one in the area of Leeds, west of Augusta, which was noted as "well known in the area..." Connecticut -- Joseph Collier, possibly passing through Salisbury, Mass., married Elizabeth Sanford, and was probably in Hartford, CT by 1662-1666. He was probably the first Collier in CT. (See also, MA listings). Thomas Collier (born about 1688) emigrated from England in 1714, settled in CT, m. 1732 a Mrs. Turner. Descendants moved to Livingston Manor, NY, later to Mich. and California. Thomas Langley Collier, of Devonshire, settled at Weston, CT in 1769. Descendants moved to Dutchess County, NY. By the 1800 Census, there were 3 Collar, 7 Coller, and 6 Collier families in CT. New Hampshire -- I haven't done any New Hampshire research to this point. Vermont -- I have not made a thorough study of Vermont names, but by 1800, there were 3 Collier families in Corinth, Orange County, and later in Hardwick, Caledonia County. Some of these, at least, were descended from the Marblehead, MA family, specifically Capt. Thomas Collier, who may have been a privateer about 1778 - 1779, during the Revolution. New York State -- In the 1790 Census, there were 23 Collier/variant families in New York State, several in the Hudson Valley. Some of these were originally of Dutch or German origin, who had Anglicized their names from Caljer or Kaljer. Wade Collier Jan 23, 2000
