"Colliers of Massachusetts" - January 2003 Update Ohio, Michigan and Iowa Lines Descendants of John (7) Collier & Mary Samson . (We are nearing the end of information on these lines that can be obtained from public records. I offer the following update preliminary to publication of the final genealogy in the hope of making connections to those Collier descendants "lost" to my family of Ohio.) My thanks to many individuals and sources for contributions on this branch of the Collier family, my own. The recently posted "FamilySearch.org" 1880 Census has yielded some long sought data. (It is this online version of the Census to which I frequently refer in the following notes.) Other Federal Censuses and online databases have also been checked. Mike Collier (Northport, Maine branch) has contributed some critical Census and Civil War records, and Jeff Leydorf of Gratiot County, Michigan has gone far out of his way to clear up open questions on "Grandfather John" of Chesterfield and Ohio, and his oldest son, Lyman. This family line is descended from Thomas and Susannah Collier, who arrived in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1635. More information can be seen on my homepage, listed below. This work is preliminary to a complete genealogy on the family, the first section of which is in final preparation. I encourage correspondence and contributions from those who believe they are fellow "Colliers of Massachusetts" descendants. I have more information on these Ohio, Michigan and Iowa lines, particularly my own of northeastern Ohio, but withhold most information on living individuals until final publication. I welcome corrections or additions, and particularly contributions from individuals who are members of the Colliers of Massachusetts family. Wade Collier January 14, 2003 "Colliers of Massachusetts" Project wade_collier@hotmail.com http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/o/l/Wade-Collier-MA/?Welcome=1040258696 Generation No. 1 1. JOHN7 COLLIER (GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born August 14, 1802, no doubt in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, and died May 7, 1882 in Newark Township, Gratiot County, Michigan. He married (1) MARY SAMSON December 5, 1822 in Chesterfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts. She was born February 10, 1804 in Massachusetts, and died April 30, 1850 in Mantua, Portage County, Ohio. He married (2) SARAH A. DAYTON November 20, 1851 in Burton, Geauga County, Ohio. She was born Abt. 1809 in Ohio, and died Bet. 1860 - 1880, probably in Ohio or Michigan. Children of JOHN COLLIER and MARY SAMSON are: 2. i. LYMAN8 COLLIER, b. October 3, 1823, Vermont; d. July 26, 1907, Pompeii, Gratiot County, Michigan. 3. ii. ADALINE COLLIER, b. April 18, 1825, Vermont; d. Aft. 1880, Iowa ??. iii. ELECTA COLLIER, b. March 6, 1827, Vermont or New York; d. August 11, 1858, Mantua, Ohio ??. Died unmarried, as far as Bible records show. 4. iv. MADISON COLLIER, b. January 13, 1830, New York; d. June 6, 1900, Michigan ??. 5. v. JANETTE COLLIER, b. January 25, 1833, New York; d. September 10, 1884, West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa. vi. JOHN COLLIER, b. February 2, 1836, Ohio. Probably died after 1861. Supposed to have served in the Union Army, but I do not have a firm record. He may be the individual of the name who served in Co. B, 138th Indiana Infantry in 1864. Brother Christopher served in Co. H. There is a family tradition that John may have married in his home area - Geauga County - but I have not been able to confirm this. I do not find John anywhere in the online 1880 Census. vii. HAMILTON S. COLLIER, b. June 12, 1839, Auburn, Geauga County, Ohio; d. February 28, 1922, West Farmington, Trumbull County, Ohio; m. (1) MARY ALICE GOBIN, October 10, 1883, Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa; b. February 3, 1841; d. Bef. 1900; m. (2) ???; d. Bef. 1922. Hamilton served in two Michigan Civil War regiments: the 1st Michigan Infantry, which suffered heavily at First Bull Run; and the 9th Michigan, which saw service in the Tennessee theater in 1861-62. "Uncle Ham" was badly wounded by a Confederate bullet at the Battle of Murfreesboro, July 13, 1862. He was nursed back to health by a Southern family, but did not return to the war. In later years he traveled by "shanks mare" throughout the country, spending considerable time in Washington State. Sisters Janette and Adaline were living in the vicinity of Iowa City, Iowa, where he first married. I have no other information on his first wife than given in the marriage record. He was married twice, and had one child, unnamed in his obituary. All had died before 1922. His 2d wife may have been named Sarah, as an individual of that name, wife of H. S. Collier, died in 1907 and is buried in the "GAR" section of Ocean View Cemetery, Port Angeles, Clallam County, Washington. Hamilton is buried near brother Christopher in Fowlers Mill Cemetery, Munson Twp., Ohio 6. viii. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS COLLIER, b. November 21, 1840, Mantua, Portage County, Ohio; d. February 25, 1923, Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio. ix. NORMAN COLLIER, b. January 8, 1843, Ohio; d. January 21, 1871, Hiram, Portage County, Ohio. No record of marriage. Occupation was "mechanic" and he was a resident of Claridon, Geauga County, Ohio when he died at age 28. Perhaps also served in the Union Army, but I have not confirmed that fact. NOTES -- A family Bible in my possession indicates that John was born August 14, 1802, no doubt in Boston, where the family of "Gershom Collier of Boston and Chesterfield" lived at least from 1793 to about 1805. A birth record has eluded me. About 1805 the family moved to Chesterfield, Hampshire County, Mass. (where several other family members were living). He married Mary Samson there in 1822, and shortly thereafter the couple must have removed to Vermont, where Lyman and Adaline were born. They were in New York State at least between 1830-1833, probably in Chautauqua County (the family of a John "Colier," of the correct composition, was in Stockton at the 1830 Census) and in Portage or Geauga County, northeastern Ohio, by 1836. John and Mary were in Auburn, Geauga County at the 1840 Census, and in nearby Mantua, Portage County in 1850. Mary died there and is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Mantua Center Road. After his 2d marriage, to the widow Sarah A. Dayton, John lived in Burton, Geauga County at least until 1860, when he, Sarah and George Dayton, aged 22 and presumably Sarah's son by a first marriage, were recorded. I lose track of John between 1860 and 1880, when he shows up in Newark, Gratiot County, Michigan living on what has proved to be the Gratiot County Poor Farm. I have found no post-1860 record of Sarah or George Dayton, and in 1880 John is listed as a widower again. (Marriage records of Chesterfield, Mass. do not list Mary Samson as a resident of another town, but I do not find any other record of her in Chesterfield. There were Samsons living in Worthington, next town to the west, but I have not find a Mary Samson in those families.) John Collier farmed wherever he lived, as did many of his sons and grandsons. The 1922 obituary of son Hamilton indicates that all six sons served in the Union forces during the Civil War, but I have only found records on Hamilton, Christopher and Lyman. (Back in Chesterfield, Mass., John's younger brother William Collier had 5 sons, 4 of whom served with the Union. Two of those sons died in that service, while the 5th was only 19 at the end of the war.) Jeff Leydorf has provided clear evidence that John was a resident of the "Gratiot County Poor Farm," Newark Township, in 1880. He died in that township May 7, 1882. I have no reason to suppose that he was not still at the Poor Farm at his death. The age at death is garbled on the online record I have seen, but that record indicates that he was a "single farmer, born in Massachusetts" (my paraphrase). Cause of death was given as "debility," which I take to be a synonym for that old expression, "infirmities of old age." It would seem that oldest son Lyman, living nearby, was unable to maintain John in his family. John Collier is buried in the old section of the Collier Cemetery, Ranger Road, Washington Township, Gratiot County. Also there are the stones of son Lyman and members of his family. Jeff Leydorf reports that John's monument is somewhat eroded, but reads "d. May 7, 1882 aged 80 years." The top portion has a carving of 2 hands clasped in an oval and at the bottom is an inscription, which appears to be "Remember the Sabbath and keep it Holy." To which we can only add, "Rest in Peace." ...................... I have recently been working on the family of the Honorable Harrison Gray Otis of Boston, whose wife, Sally Foster, was a Thomas Collier descendant. In stark contrast to the hard life of John Collier, I offer these brief comments on the life of an 8th generation descendant of Thomas and Susannah Collier, born in Boston five years later than John: ALLYNE8 OTIS (10th of 11 children of "Harry" Otis and Sally Foster) was born August 27, 1807, and died 1873 in Newport, Rhode Island. Notes for ALLYNE OTIS: "....Harvard 1825. Built a house in Newport 1852 and there d. 1873." See "Harrison Gray Otis, 1765-1848, The Urbane Federalist," Samuel Eliot Morison, Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1969, pages 487-490, 523. Pages 487-490. Was a class and club mate of Charles Francis Adams, future minister to Great Britain. Adams thought little of Allyne, however. On page 488, Morison says, "Allyne, after spending a few months in his elder brother James's New York office, decided that work was not for him, and lived to a ripe old age without doing another day's labor." ..."[Both he and brother George] were typical members of the affluent dilettante, those faint and futile Americans abroad whom Henry James so well described." (Prof. Morison, the eminent Harvard historian, was an Otis Descendant, and therefore also of the Thomas Collier line.) Generation No. 2 2. LYMAN8 COLLIER (JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born October 3, 1823 in Vermont, and died July 26, 1907 in Pompeii, Gratiot County, Michigan. He married JULIA MELINDA GILES September 13, 1848 in Bainbridge, Geauga County, Ohio ??. She was born Abt. 1828 in Ohio, and died Aft. 1870 in Michigan ??. Children of LYMAN COLLIER and JULIA GILES are: i. CHLOE9 COLLIER, b. Abt. 1857, Ohio. 7. ii. CHARLES COLLIER, b. 1859, Ohio; d. 1931, Washington Twp, Gratiot County, Michigan ??. 8. iii. JOHN J. COLLIER, b. 1867, Ohio; d. 1926, Michigan. NOTES - (The dates I give for Lyman are from the 1850 vintage family Bible in my possession, but his tombstone gives birth as Oct. 3, 1824 and death as Jul. 24, 1908.) Other than the name of his Civil War unit, I have no record of Lyman from his marriage in 1848 until 1870, when he appears in the Census of Washington Township, Gratiot County. His tombstone in the Collier Cemetery indicates that he was a Private in Co. A, 142nd Ohio Volunteers. This was one of the 100 day units, serving from May 12 to September 2, 1864. The unit served in the Virginia theater and was in the trenches at Petersburg during part of the summer of 1864. In 1870 the family must have recently moved to Michigan from Ohio, as the children were all born in the latter state. They do not appear in the online 1880 Census records I have seen, but I have no reason to think they did not in fact live in the area of Gratiot County from ca. 1870 on. Lyman was a farmer, still the common occupation in Gratiot County. He does not appear as a landowner in a 1901 atlas of Washington Township, but perhaps had lived at some period in section 20, on what is now Ranger Road. This is where the Collier Cemetery is located, and that is bordered by a Collier Creek (Collier Brook in 1901). In 1917, after Lyman's death during a visit to nearby Pompeii, son Charles owned 40 acres adjacent to the cemetery, while in both 1901 and 1917 son John J. Collier owned 40 acres in section 16. The Collier name is still remembered by residents of the area, but I don't believe anyone of the name still lives there. There is no grave marker in the Collier Cemetery for Julia Melinda, Lyman's wife. 3. ADALINE8 COLLIER (JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born April 18, 1825 in Vermont, and died Aft. 1880 in Iowa ??. She married WASHINGTON ALLEN August 29, 1849 in Portage County, Ohio. He was probably born September 10, 1815 in Oakham, Worcester County, Massachusetts, and died Aft. 1880 in Iowa ??. Children of ADALINE COLLIER and WASHINGTON ALLEN are: i. EMMA R.9 ALLEN, b. 1856, Ohio; d. Aft. 1880. ii. FRANK A. ALLEN, b. 1860, Iowa; d. Aft. 1880. NOTES -- Washington and Adaline Allen appear in the 1850 Census (then in the household of John Collier in Mantua, Portage County, Ohio). In 1860, 1870 and 1880 they appear in the Census in Iowa City or vicinity, Johnson County, Iowa. Washington is called a cabinetmaker in 1850 and a carpenter in 1880. I have not seen the actual 1860 and 1870 microfilm. The names of the children are as given in the 1880 Census - there may have been other children. Son Frank Allen was "Agt. Peoples Tea Company St. Louis. " Sister Janette (Collier) Westland was also in this area of Iowa by 1870 (and in West Liberty, Iowa in 1880), and brother Hamilton married in Iowa City in 1883. I have no record on the Allen family after 1880. 4. MADISON8 COLLIER (JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born January 13, 1830 in New York, and died June 6, 1900 in Michigan ??. His wife was probably MARY A. HEWES, who married a Madison Collier in Cuyahoga County, Ohio on Nov. 9, 1852 . She was born perhaps about 1836 in New York, and died Aft. 1880 in Michigan ??. Children of MADISON COLLIER and MARY HEWES are: i. MATTIE G.9 COLLIER, b. Abt. 1856, Michigan; d. Aft. 1880, Michigan ??; m. GILBERT STRIKER, October 11, 1874, Springport, Jackson County, Michigan; b. September 11, 1851, Michigan; d. May 22, 1919, Michigan. . The record of Mattie's marriage and husband is from online material on the Striker family. They appear in the 1880 Census in Baltimore, Barry County, Mich. I do not see that placename on a current map. 9. ii. GEORGE D. COLLIER, b. Abt. 1862, Michigan; d. Aft. 1920, Michigan ??. 10. iii. ELLSWORTH M. COLLIER, b. Abt. 1869, Michigan; d. Aft. 1912, Michigan ??. iv. LOLAY M. COLLIER, b. 1872, Michigan; d. Aft. 1880. NOTES -- Dates of birth and death for Madison are given in the family Bible. Most of the rest of the information I have pieced together on he and his family comes from Census records. In 1860 he was a farmer living in Batavia Township, Branch County, Mich. with wife "Ancelia," born about 1835, and daughter Mattie, aged 4. The family must have moved to Michigan from Ohio by 1856, as Mattie was born in Mich. Madison is supposed to have served in the Union Army with the other 5 brothers, but I haven't located a record of this. In both 1870 and 1880, Madison and family were living in Springport, Jackson County, Michigan, some 35 miles northeast of Batavia. In 1870 his wife is named "Ancelia," born about 1836, while in 1880 - assuming he was married only once - she is named "Mary A." and listed as born about 1840. Location of her birth is given as New York in all 3 Census records I have seen. I have nothing on Madison and wife after 1880, except his date of death. 5. JANETTE8 COLLIER (JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born January 25, 1833 in New York, and died September 10, 1884 in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa. She married WILLIAM C. WESTLAND March 27, 1851 in Portage County, Ohio. He was born May 5, 1823 in Connecticut or Ohio, and died January 19, 1899 in Grand Ledge, Eaton County, Michigan. Children of JANETTE COLLIER and WILLIAM WESTLAND are: 11. i. WALTER C.9 WESTLAND, b. Abt. 1851, Portage County, Ohio; d. Aft. 1899, Grand Ledge, Eaton County, Michigan ??. ii. WILLIAM EUGENE WESTLAND, b. July 1, 1853, Portage County, Ohio; d. December 14, 1875, West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa. 12. iii. ARTHUR J. WESTLAND, b. 1855, Portage County, Ohio; d. 1926, West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa ??. NOTES - (I am using the spelling "Janette," which is that used in the 1899 obituary of her husband, William C. Westland, probably prepared by the couple's son, Walter C. Westland. The Collier family bible in the author's possession uses "Gennett." The 1850 Census for Aurora, Portage County, Ohio has the spelling "Janette," and the 1860 Hiram, Ohio Census uses "Jenette.") At the date of the 1850 Census (October 16, in the Portage County enumeration), about 6 months after the death of her mother, Mary (Samson) Collier, in Mantua, Portage County, Janette was listed as a "Domestic" in the household of Samuel Elder, Jr., in Aurora, the township west of Mantua. The following spring, at the age of 18, she married William C. Westland. The wedding was no doubt in the area of Aurora, Mantua or Hiram (adjoining townships, west to east), but I have not located the record In 1860, William, "farmer," and Janette were living in Hiram, with children Walter C., aged 9 [born about 1851] and Arthur, aged 7 [born about 1853]. A third son, William Eugene, must have been born after the date of the 1860 Census, and had died before January , 1899. Also in Hiram in 1860 was William's presumed father - also William. A possible brother, Gilbert, was in Hiram in 1870. William's obituary, with date and source not noted, but probably from the Grand Ledge, Michigan, The Independent shortly after his death there on January 19, 1899, indicates that the Westlands moved to Eaton County, Michigan about 1864-65, first to Kalamo Township, then to Charlotte. William was probably following the tailor trade by that time, which work he continued for the rest of his working life. The family removed to Iowa City, Iowa before 1870 (probably 1868), and by 1875 was in West Liberty, Muscatine County, less than 20 miles to the east. William was one of many "sponsors" of an 1875 atlas of Iowa, and was in West Liberty in that year. There Janette died on September 10, 1884, at age 51. At some point after her death William returned to Grand Ledge, Michigan where son Walter lived. Janette, William, sons William Eugene (or Eugene W.) and Arthur (as well as Arthur's wife Ada) are all buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty, Iowa. 6. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS8 COLLIER (JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born November 21, 1840 in Mantua, Portage County, Ohio, and died February 25, 1923 in Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio. He married SARAH O. STEPHENSON August 20, 1865 in Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio ??, daughter of WILLIAM STEPHENSON and JANE WOODWARD. She was born October 25, 1842 in Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio ??, and died March 6, 1883 in Munson, Geauga County, Ohio. Children of CHRISTOPHER COLLIER and SARAH STEPHENSON are: 13. i. NELLIE MAY9 COLLIER, b. May 12, 1868, Ohio; d. 1949, Painesville, Lake County, Ohio. 14. ii. NORMAN RANDOLPH COLLIER, b. October 29, 1872, Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio; d. April 27, 1945, Southington, Trumbull County, Ohio. 15. iii. ESTELLA BERTRES COLLIER, b. April 15, 1876, Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio; d. December 22, 1965, Chardon, Geauga County, Ohio. 16. iv. ELVA A. COLLIER, b. June 12, 1878, Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio; d. November 11, 1920, Chesterland, Geauga County, Ohio. 17. v. CARLOS HOMER COLLIER, b. February 21, 1882, Munson Twp, Geauga County, Ohio; d. March 23, 1968. NOTES -- There is a discrepancy in records of Christopher's date of birth - family Bible in my possession clearly states Nov. 21, 1840, while his 1923 obituary states Nov. 23, 1841. This is my line of the family. I have fairly complete information on the generations after Christopher, but withhold them until final publication. During the Civil War, Christopher served in both Co. H, 138th Ind. Inf. and Co A, 11th Michigan Infantry (2d organization), and was a sergeant in the latter unit. He possibly was a carpenter or engineer in the army and was employed as a carpenter thereafter. Christopher and Sarah's first child, Nellie, is not recorded in Munson, but at least by 1870 they were in that township, and Christopher remained in or near Geauga County for the rest of his life. Generation No. 3 7. CHARLES9 COLLIER (LYMAN8, JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 1859 in Ohio, and died 1931 in Washington Twp, Gratiot County, Michigan ??. He married IDA B. ???. She was born 1857, and died 1926. Children of CHARLES COLLIER and IDA ??? are: i. IVA M.10 COLLIER, b. 1883. ii. H. M. COLLIER, b. 1893. iii. GUY COLLIER, b. 1886; d. 1898. NOTES - In 1917 Charles and his family owned 40 acres adjacent to the current Collier Cemetery, Ranger Road, Washington Township, Gratiot County. Names of wife and children are taken from the 1917 "Farm Journal Directory of Gratiot County." Charles, wife Ida and infant Guy are buried in the Collier Cemetery. Iva M. and H. M. are known only from names and dates of birth (only) on family tombstone there. (H. M. may be the "Hugh" Collier who rented 40 acres in the same area in 1917. I have been unable to trace him further.) 8. JOHN J.9 COLLIER (LYMAN8, JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 1867 in Ohio, and died 1926 in Michigan. He married DIADAMIA ???. She was born 1871, and died 1957. Children of JOHN COLLIER and DIADAMIA ??? are: i. NINA A.10 COLLIER, b. 1895; d. 1896. ii. ALICE EDITH COLLIER, d. Aft. 1917. NOTES - In 1901 and 1917 John J. owned 40 acres in Section 16, Washington Township. At one time Dean Road led south from the current Michigan route 57 to this property, and there was a "Collier" barn there until perhaps the mid-20th Century. Neither the road nor the barn remain. Names of wife and child are taken from the 1917 "Farm Journal Directory." John, wife Diadamia and infant daughter Nina are buried in Collier Cemetery. 9. GEORGE D.9 COLLIER (MADISON8, JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1862 in Michigan, and died Aft. 1920 in Michigan ??. He married CLARA O. ???. She was born Abt. 1878 in Michigan, and died Aft. 1920. Child of GEORGE COLLIER and CLARA ??? is: i. WAYNE F.10 COLLIER, b. Abt. 1902, Michigan; d. Aft. 1920. NOTES - George appears in the 1880 Census as son of Madison. Names of wife and child are taken from 1920 online Census of Springport, Jackson County. There are still Colliers living in Springport, and I am hoping to correspond with them. 10. ELLSWORTH M.9 COLLIER (MADISON8, JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1869 in Michigan, and died Aft. 1912 in Michigan ??. He married ???. Children of ELLSWORTH COLLIER and ??? are: i. ETHEL10 COLLIER, m. GLENN PEASE, June 19, 1912, Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan. ii. GEORGIA COLLIER. NOTES - Ellsworth appears in the 1880 Springport Census as son of Madison. Names of children from a wedding invitation of 1912 in Southington, Ohio family files. Ethel and Georgia were then daughters of an "E. Collier." A local historian for Calhoun County, Michigan has no record of Colliers or the Pease family in late 19th-early 20th Century. Calhoun County lies to the west of Jackson County, and Albion is less than 10 miles from Springport. Further research is needed on the family of Ellsworth Collier. 11. WALTER C.9 WESTLAND (JANETTE8 COLLIER, JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1851 in Portage County, Ohio, and died Aft. 1899 in Grand Ledge, Eaton County, Michigan ??. He married MARTHA ???. She was born 1853 in Michigan, and died Aft. 1880. Children of WALTER WESTLAND and MARTHA ??? are: i. NELLIE M.10 WESTLAND, b. 1878, Michigan. ii. GRACE A. WESTLAND, b. 1879, Michigan. NOTES - Walter's occupation was "editor" as early as 1880, and he was the editor of the Grand Ledge (Michigan) The Independent in January, 1899. Names of wife and children from the 1880 Census. 12. ARTHUR J.9 WESTLAND (JANETTE8 COLLIER, JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 1855 in Portage County, Ohio, and died 1926 in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa ??. He married ADA ???. She was born 1855 in Iowa, and died Aft. 1880. Child of ARTHUR WESTLAND and ADA ??? is: i. HARRY10 WESTLAND, b. 1880, Iowa. NOTES - Names of wife and child from the 1880 Census. Dates of death from online cemetery records. Arthur and Ada Westland are buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty, Iowa. 13. NELLIE MAY9 COLLIER (CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS8, JOHN7, GERSHOM6, EPHRAIM BOSWORTH5, THOMAS4, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born May 12, 1868 in Ohio, and died 1949 in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio. She married RALPH H. FREEMAN January 22, 1885 in Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio ??. He was born Abt. 1859 in Ohio, and died Aft. 1930 in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio. Children of NELLIE COLLIER and RALPH FREEMAN are: i. GROVE10 FREEMAN, d. Painesville, Ohio. ii. GEORGE FREEMAN, b. August 10, 1887, Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio. iii. BURTON FREEMAN, b. April 6, 1889, Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio. iv. GORDON FREEMAN, b. Abt. 1890; d. Burton, Ohio ??. v. DAUGHTER FREEMAN, b. March 25, 1890, Munson Township, Geauga County, Ohio. 18. vi.
