Colliers of Mass - Final Genealogy Gen 1-4 Updated through January 30, 2004 --- THE FORMATTING OF THE FOLLOWING IS INCONSISTENT DUE TO THE LIMITATIONS OF A "TEXT" DOCUMENT. As we are preparing the "Colliers of Massachusetts" genealogy for publication, perhaps by summer or fall of this year, I offer the bare bones of it through the 4th American genearation. No biographical details or sources are shown in this version, but will be complete in the published work. To keep file size manageable, I will post generation No. 5 within a few days. Wade Collier "Colliers of Massachusetts" Project Trumbull County, Ohio and Lunenburg, Mass. -------------- The Colliers of Massachusetts Descendants of Thomas and Susannah Collier, who were in Hingham, Mass. in Sept. 1635 Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS1 COLLIER was probably born Abt. 1576 in England, and died April 6, 1647 in Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He married SUSANNAH (UNKNOWN) Bef. 1622 in England. She was perhaps born Abt. 1591 in England, and died December 10, 1667 in Hingham. Children of THOMAS COLLIER and SUSANNAH (UNKNOWN)are: 2. i. THOMAS2 COLLIER, LT., b. Abt. 1622, England; d. 1691, Hull, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. 3. ii. MOSES COLLIER, b. Abt. 1625, England; d. March 17, 1683/84, Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. iii. JOHN COLLIER. A John Collier was granted lands in Hull in 1642, in company with Thomas 2. Nothing is certainly seen of him later, and it is not known whether he was related to Thomas1. The next mention of a John Collier in Hull records is of an individual of that name being one of the warders of the beacon on Point Allerton, Hull, in 1673/74. This is likely a record of the son of Thomas 2 (See # 5, below), although at the age of only 12 or so he would seem to be rather young for such a responsibility. In the records of the Suffolk County Court for 1678 the names of both Thomas and John Collier are listed as signing the Oath of Allegiance in Hull. I again question whether a young man of about 16 would be required to sign this Oath. (See notes with Thomas2, below.) iv. SUSANNA COLLIER, d. Aft. 1647. Her date of birth is unknown, but she was living in Hingham at the time of her father’s death in April 1647. In his will she was given a cow, a hog, and was to have a bed and other household goods after the death of her mother. No record of Susanna has been found after 1647. Generation No. 2 2. THOMAS2 COLLIER, LT. (THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1622 in England, and died 1691 in Hull, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He married JANE CURTIS December 30, 1647 in Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, daughter of MR. (UNKNOWN) CURTIS and (UNKNOWN) ALEXANDER, and step-daughter of Robert Jones. She was born Bef. 1630 in the area of Reading, Berkshire, England, and died April 1, 1709 in Hull. Children of THOMAS COLLIER and JANE CURTIS are: i. ELIZABETH3 COLLIER, b. Bef. December 17, 1648, Hingham or Hull. She was baptized on that date in Hingham by Rev. Peter Hobart. Not mentioned in father’s will made June 25, 1690, and assumed to have died prior to that date. ii. JAMES COLLIER, b. Bef. April 6, 1651, Hingham or Hull. He was baptized on that date in Hingham by Rev. Peter Hobart. Not mentioned in father’s will made June 25, 1690, and assumed to have died prior to that date. iii. THOMAS COLLIER, b. Bef. May 28, 1654, Hingham or Hull.; d. July 25, 1719, Hull. He seems not to have married, and left “all” to his brother Gershom at his death. He was possibly the Thomas Collier who held some unreadable office in the town of Hull in 1683. About February 1692-93 he signed a “petition for the repeal of the law prohibiting the taking of mackeral during May and July” (Massachusetts Archives card file, vol. 61:365). At the 1718-1719 Hull Town Meeting, Thomas "Colyer" was chosen "tithing man," as best I can decipher. After his death, through a bequest of his own, or act of his family, a silver cup engraved "The gift of Thomas Colyer to the Chorch of hool 1720,” was presented to the church. It is now in the possession of Yale University. Thomas was buried in the Hull Village Cemetery, and his gravestone is the only early one remaining there for the Collier surname. INCLUDE PHOTO OF Silver Cups, gifts to the Hull Church 1720 - 1724 4. iv. EXPERIENCE COLLIER, b. Bef. August 1, 1662, Hull; d. January 24, 1694/95, Hull. 5. v. JOHN COLLIER, b. Bef. August 1, 1662, Hull; d. January 31, 1712/13, Hull vi. BENJAMIN COLLIER, b. Bef. November 19, 1665, Hull; d. August 18, 1730, Hull Baptized by Rev. Hobart in Hingham in 1665, not otherwise seen in Hull records. Probably did not marry, and described in his father’s will as “weak in intellect.” 6. vii. GERSHOM COLLIER, LT., b. Abt. 1674, Hull; d. February 19, 1753, Hull. 3. MOSES2 COLLIER (THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1625 in England, and died March 17, 1683/84 in Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He married (1) ELIZABETH CURTIS Abt. November 26, 1655 in Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts , daughter of MR. CURTIS and (UNKNOWN) ALEXANDER, and step-daughter of Robert Jones. She was born probably Bef. 1636 in the area of Reading, Berkshire, England , and died April 10, 1657 in Hingham. He married (2) ELIZABETH BULLARD Abt. December 17, 1657, in Hingham, daughter of WILLIAM BULLARD and MARY (UNKNOWN). She was born in England or Massachusetts, and died Aft. 1690, probably in Woodbridge. Child of MOSES COLLIER and ELIZABETH CURTIS is: i. BENONI3 COLLIER, b. April 5, 1657, Hingham; d. Aft. 1678, possibly in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Children of MOSES COLLIER and ELIZABETH BULLARD are: ii. MOSES3 COLLIER, b. November 8, 1658, Hingham; d. Aft. October 8, 1684, possibly in New Jersey. Monnette, in his history of Woodbridge and Piscataway says that Moses, “Jr.” came there with the family, but “soon rem. elsewhere.” There are later records of this name in New Jersey, but I cannot yet connect any to this individual. iii. ELIZABETH COLLIER, b. October 14, 1659, Hingham. She no doubt moved to Woodbridge with the family, as in 1687 she and sister Susannah gave consent for mother Elizabeth (Bullard) Collier, widow of Moses to sell property in Charlestown, Mass. that had been left to the mother by W[illiam] Bullard, her father. [1] Elizabeth is not certainly seen afterwards, although Monnette presents some speculation in his work on Woodbridge, New Jersey. (See notes, below.) iv. DAUGHTER COLLIER, b. February 10, 1661/62, Hingham. Her name was possibly Mary, and she may have gone with the family to Woodbridge, New Jersey and there married Captain John Bishop, Jr. The records of this possible marriage are so vague that I do not list it at this time. 7. v. THOMAS COLLIER, b. Bef. June 5, 1664, Hingham; d. Aft. 1719, Woodbridge, Middlesex County, New Jersey. 8. vi. DEBORAH COLLIER, b. June 20, 1666, Hingham; d. He was born Abt. 1646, probably in Hull, and was lost at sea Bef. January 1694/95. Children of EXPERIENCE COLLIER and NICHOLAS BAKER are: 11. i. JANE4 BAKER, b. Bet. 1686 - 1687, perhaps in Boston, d. December 1, 1724, Hull. 12. ii. ELIZABETH BAKER, b. Abt. 1691, perhaps in Boston; d. September 9, 1715, Hull. 5. JOHN3 COLLIER (THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Bef. August 1, 1662 in Hull, and died there January 31, 1712/13. He married MERCY (UNKNOWN) Bef. 1690. She was born Abt. 1666, and died March 11, 1747/48 in Hull. Children of JOHN COLLIER and MERCY ??? are: 13. i. ELIZABETH4 COLLIER, b. Abt. 1690, Hull; d. there January 29, 1743/44. 14. ii. EXPERIENCE COLLIER, b. Probably died young, before 1713. 20. vi. JANE COLLIER, b. September 10, 1710; d. August 16, 1800, Boston. vii. GERSHOM COLLIER, b. November 1, 1713; d. possibly at sea Bef. December 1749. Gershom was briefly a Harvard College student: unmarried. viii. JOHN COLLIER, b. March 9, 1715/16; d. Aft. February 3, 1758, probably in Boston. He appears in the partitioning agreement of Dec. 1749, see below, and on Feb. 3, 1758, he, “of Boston,” sold land in Hull, “formerly belonging to Thomas Collier grandfather of the said John Collier,” to Ephraim Bosworth. I have found no certain later record, nor any record of marriage or children. [2] 21. ix. JONATHAN COLLIER, DEACON, b. May 3, 1719; d. Bef. February 28, 1776, Groton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. 22. x. WILLIAM COLLIER, b. June 21, 1721; d. 1794, Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. xi. ISAAC COLLIER, b. March 7, 1725/26; d. Bef. December 1749. Nothing recored after birth; he does not appear in the partitioning agreement of Dec. 1749 (see below). 23. xii. MOSES COLLIER, b. June 2, 1729; d. Bef. He married HANNAH DENNIS March 1, 1692/93 in Woodbridge, probably the daughter of JOHN DENNIS and SARAH BLOOMFIELD. She was born Bef. 1672 in Woodbridge, and died there Abt. 1711. He or a son was likely the Moses "Collyer" who was called deceased in the "Brunswick Gazette" of August 7, 1792. The article is an advertisement for the sale of 4 parcels of property in the vicinity of Woodbridge, NJ (locations not specified), apparently all the former property of Moses. The description: "(1) 66 acres, being the easternmost part of the farm formerly belonging to Moses Collyer, deceased, lying on the highway leading from Brunswick to Woodbridge. (2). A lot of upland on the south side of the said road, 15 acres with a small house. (3). One equal half part of a lot of salt meadow called Collyer's Ridge, number of acres unknown. (4). 32 acres of upland and meadow near Red Root Landing." Source of the above: "Notices from New Jersey Newspapers 1781-1790”, Thomas B. Willson, Records of New Jersey Volume I, (Lambertville, New Jersey : Hunterdon House, 1988), page 380. NOTE -- I do not find Collyer's Ridge or Red Root Landing on current maps of the area. There is a Red Root Creek, seemingly a backwater of the Raritan River, in the town of Keasbey. v. SARAH COLLIER, b. July 2, 1705. vi. THOMAS COLLIER, b. March 29, 1707. 25. vii. JOHN COLLYER, SR., b. There was also a Thomas Collier who settled in Dorchester in 1784 or 1785 (after the death of his father, Thomas, "Sr."): "Thomas Collier his wife and Children came into this Town to live in the year 1784 or 1785, from ____[sic]." [2] (A Lemuel Collier and descendants lived in Dorchester for some decades from the time of the Revolutionary War to at least 1813, but I have not found any connection to our South Shore family there. Lemuel served in the Army at the time of the Lexington Alarm (April 19, 1775), so was clearly too young to be a son of Thomas and Jemima Pope. It is intriguing that Jemima Pope had a brother named Lemuel, however.) 51. iii. GERSHOM COLLIER, b. April 30, 1738, Scituate; d. November 2, 1822, Northport, Waldo County, Maine. 52. iv. John’s occupation in Boston is given by Copeland as “Wood-Wharf-inger” – whatever that is – and the book indicates the couple had no children. Several nieces and nephews are mentioned in John’s will.) [1] 124. iv. JOSIAH COPELAND, b. 1781, Weymouth; d. there 1828; m. ELIZABETH PRATT July 24, 1806. 44. JOSEPH5 SPEAR, JR. He married (1) PHOEBE BINNEY October 25, 1743 in Hull, daughter of JOHN BINNEY and HANNAH PAINE. She was born November 11, 1725 in Hull, and died Bef. June 1759. He married (2) MARY DAWSON Aft. June 14, 1759 (intention) in Boston. Children of JOSEPH SPEAR and PHOEBE BINNEY, are: i. HANNAH6 SPEAR, b. May 5, 1744, Hull. No later record seen. ii. BARNABUS SPEAR, b. September 13, 1745, Hull; d.there December 4, 1745. iii. JOSEPH SPEAR, b. February 26, 1746/47, Boston; d. there November 28, 1749. Binney (p. 28) indicates he was baptized at New South Church, Boston, on February 28, 1749. Same source gives date of death as November 29, 1947 – not 1749, as given in George Spear, p. 54. iii. JOSHUA SPEAR, b. April 29, 1749, Hull; d. 1789, Boston. Date of death, but not location, given in Binney, p. 28. 125. v. PHOEBE SPEAR, b. December 23, 1750, Hull; d. June 1842; m. ASAPH HARLOW March 1772. vi. JOSEPH SPEAR, b. December 29, 1752, Hull; d. May 17, 1794, Port Au Prince, Haiti; m. ELIZABETH SPEAR, May 15, 1777, Boston; b. May 13, 1752, Boston. (Elizabeth Spear was a daughter of Captain David Spear, # 46 below, hence a first cousin of Joseph.) Binney seems to have correctly identified this Joseph Spear and his wife, but in one paragraph gives his date of death as both 1787 and 1794: "Joseph [Spear], b. 1747 [sic: confused with earlier son Joseph, born February 26, 1746/47, died November 28, 1749, in Boston], d, 1794, surveyor and soldier of the revolution. He m. Elizabeth, dau. David Spear. He d. at Port au Prince, Sept. 1787 [sic]." [1] No record of children found. 126. vii. ELIZABETH SPEAR, b. March 31, 1754, Hull; d. February 7, 1830, Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; m. THOMAS HARLOW Aft. May 15, 1777. 127. viii. GERSHOM SPEAR, b. December 15, 1755, Hull; d. January 4, 1816, probably Boston; m. ELIZABETH BRADLEE June 4, 1780. ix. NATHANIEL SPEAR, b. June 7, 1757, Hull. Baptized in Hull on June 13, 1757. I have no certain later record, although there are a total of six records of service by “Nathaniel Spears” in Massachusetts in the Revolutionary War. This child may have died young, or may be confused with the Nathaniel listed below as having been born about 1762. [2] Children of JOSEPH SPEAR and MARY DAWSON are: x. MARY6 SPEAR, b. Bet. April 29, 1760 - 1761; d. January 1846. [3] xi. NATHANIEL SPEAR, b. Abt. 1762; m. SALLY FREEMAN. xii. HANNAH SPEAR, b. 1765; d. November 1845, probably in Boston, m. JEREMIAH JOCHIM KAHLER, January 23, 1794, Boston; d. Abt. 1830, probably in Boston. Jeremiah Kahler’s ancestry is unkown to me, but at least from 1796 to 1830 he is listed in various Boston City Directories as a merchant with business premises in the early years on Summer or Sea Streets, and in the 1820s on Milk Street. I have found no reliable record of children of Jeremiah and Hannah, but note that a Corporal Jeremiah Kahler served in Kendall’s Battalion, Mass. Militia during the War of 1812. It would seem likely that this was a son, rather than the father, who was probably over 50 years of age by that time. About 1795 Jeremiah is mentioned as a “clerk” to William Gray, perhaps the Salem ship owner. Both Jeremiah and “Hannah Kahler, widow” appear in the 1830 Boston directory, so Jeremiah probably died about that year. [4] 45. GERSHOM5 SPEAR, CAPTAIN (MARY4 COLLIER, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born April 7, 1723 in Hull, and died at sea between 1760 - 1768. March 23, 1768. Children of GERSHOM SPEAR and LUSANA WETHERELL are: i. JOSEPH6 SPEAR, b. Bef. November 22, 1744, probably Boston. i. LUCY SPEAR, m. (UNKNOWN) OAKES, CAPTAIN; b. perhaps Pembroke, Plymouth County, Mass. 46. DAVID5 SPEAR, CAPTAIN (MARY4 COLLIER, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 1726 in Hull, and died July 8, 1803 in Boston. December 29, 1752, Hull; d. May 17, 1794, Port Au Prince, Haiti; m. (2) JOSEPH CONDIES, Aft. May, 1794. (Joseph Spear was the son of Joseph Spear, Jr., # 44 in this genealogy. See some comments with his father’s entry, above.) No record of children found. Children of DAVID SPEAR and SARAH STODDARD are: ii. ABIGAIL6 SPEAR, b. December 15, 1755, Boston. 128. iii. November 12, 1768 in Scituate, son of LAZARUS BOWKER and ABIGAIL BUCK. He was born Bef. March 11, 1743/44 in Scituate, and probably died there May 26, 1832. Children of MARY COLLIER and LAZARUS BOWKER, all born in Scituate, are: 152. i. DEMMICK6 BOWKER, b. December 10, 1769; d. Scituate 1815; m. MARGARET WHITING February 10, 1799. 153. ii. January 18, 1788 in Boston. He married ANN HOUSE January 31, 1771 in Hanover, daughter of JOHN HOUSE and REBECCA BOWKER. She was born September 14, 1746 in Hanover, and died Bef. REBECCA COLLIER, b. Abt. 1774, probably Boston; d. Bef. 1850, probably Chautauqua County, New York; m. JAMES BATES, JR. January 12, 1792. 57. PAUL5 BAXTER (JANE4 COLLIER, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born September 26, 1730 in Braintree, and died Bef. February 25, 1782 in Boston. He married (1) THEODOSIA CARPENTER June 6, 1751 in Hull, daughter of REV. EZRA CARPENTER and ELIZABETH GREENWOOD. She was born June 6, 1730 in Hull, and died August 14, 1756, probably in Boston. He married (2) SARAH SCUTT Aft. March 3, 1757 in Boston. He married (3) HANNAH GIDNEY October 17, 1765 in Boston. She was born Abt. 1731, and died July 12, 1796 in Boston (The primary source for this family is Sprague’s Genealogies of the Families of Braintree, Mass…. The children were probably all born in Boston. The order of births of the children by Hannah Gidney is as given by Waldo Sprague, but it would seem that Charles, listed as the last, should be among the earliest, as he married in 1790, and was bonded with others as early as that year in guardianship and probate proceedings. [1] ) Child of PAUL BAXTER and THEODOSIA CARPENTER is: i. JANE6 BAXTER, b. April 13, 1754, Boston; probably m. EBENEZER AYRES, June 30, 1774, Boston. The marriage record reads “Jenny, dau. of Paul Baxter, cooper & Ebenezer Ayres m. June 30 1774, at Boston.” [2] Sprague lists “Jenny” as a child of Paul and Hannah Gidney, his third wife (married in 1765) but that is clearly wrong. Neither a Jane nor a “Jenny” are mentioned in Hannah Gedney Baxter’s will of 1796. [3] Jane’s birth is given in Boston records. [4] No further record found. Child of PAUL BAXTER and SARAH SCUTT is: ii. JOHN6 BAXTER. Sprague is the source for Sarah Scutt being the mother of John. The boy was said to be “over 14” on February 25, 1782, after his father’s death, when Jonathan Dwight of Springfield, Hampshire Co., was appointed guardian. [5] I find no later mention of John. Children of PAUL BAXTER and HANNAH GIDNEY are: iii. GEORGE GIDNEY6 BAXTER, b. October 15, 1766, Boston; d. there July 9, 1802. [6, 7] George’s birth and death are recorded, but I have found no other record. iv. PAUL BAXTER, b. Abt. 1776; d. Aft. February 1799; m. ANN WALKER, November 8, 1795, Boston. Paul was a cooper in Boston. Between December 1795 and September 1799 he and wife Ann were involved in several real estate transactions in the vicinity of Battery Alley and Battery Street in Boston’s North End. In the 1800 Boston City Directory he was listed as a cooper in Batte[r]y Alley. I have yet found no record of children. Paul probably lived until after 1820, as there is a Paul Baxter in the Boston Census in 1810 and 1820. [8, 9] v. HANNAH BAXTER, d. Aft. February 1799; m. ELISHA TOWER, August 28, 1796, Boston; d. Aft. February 1799, when she received a share in the distribution of her mother’s estate. Elisha5 Tower was born in Cohasset in 1770, son of Elisha4 Tower and Sarah Marble. (The Tower family has a long and distinguished history in Cohasset, and will be encountered again in this genealogy. The first American member of the family was John1, who arrived in Hingham in 1637.) I have yet found no record of children of Elisha and Hannah in Boston, and the Cohasset records mention nothing after their intention of marriage, August 5, 1795. [10, 11] vi. SALLY GIDNEY BAXTER, d. Aft. February 1799; m. THOMAS HOWE, February 14, 1796, Boston; d. Aft. February 1799, when she received a share in the distribution of her mother’s estate. [12] Some sources suggest that she married an Amasa Yale in Western Massachusetts perhaps about 1791, and then removed to Vermont (later Salem, New York). Mr. Yale is said to have died in Vermont in October 1797. This identification of Sally Baxter, daughter of Paul, seems to be clearly mistaken. In addition to the obvious problems with dates and places, at her marriage to Thomas Howe, in 1796, she is clearly identified as “Miss Sally Gidney Baxter.” This would indicate she had not been previously married. Her marriage record of February 14, 1796, Second Baptist Church, Boston, reads “Mr. Thomas Howe, Miss Sally Gidney Baxter.” [13] vii. CHARLES BAXTER, d. Aft. February 1799; m. FRANCES MCCLURE, May 18, 1790, Boston. Although listed by Sprague as the last child of Paul Baxter, his marriage in 1790 clearly indicates he was one of the first children by Hannah Gidney. Charles was also a cooper, and – unless there was another Charles Baxter in the family – in 1790 was bonded with mother Hannah in the guardianship of brother Paul. “He was elected packer of beef & culler of fish in 1791 in Braintree.” [14] On August 23, 1796 the situations were reversed, as Paul was made executor of his mother’s estate, while Charles was bonded with him. Charles received a portion of the distribution of the estate of Hannah on February 12, 1799. I have yet found no further record of his life, or of children. [15] 58. JOHN5 DOANE (JANE4 COLLIER, GERSHOM3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born March 17, 1733/34 in Eastham, Barnstable County, Massachusetts, and died Bef. July 21, 1801, probably in Boston. He married (1) LUCY DAVENPORT Aft. March 27, 1754 in Boston, daughter of JAMES DAVENPORT and MARY WALKER. She was born November 17, 1733 in Boston, and died January 1788 in Cohasset. He married (2) REBECCA DOANE (Name doubtful) Bef. June 14, 1790. Children of JOHN DOANE and LUCY DAVENPORT are: 160. i.
